Chai bye-bye?

The Indian tea landscape is experiencing a dynamic shift, driven by changing consumer preferences, rising health consciousness, and an increasing focus on sustainability. It transforms from a daily ritual into a more refined and conscious experience. Consumers are exploring teas not only for taste but also for their health, mindfulness, and even luxury. Tea is one of the most widely consumed beverages globally, recognized for its refreshing taste and potential health benefits. Contemporary consumers display a more informed and intentional approach to their beverage choices.

“There is a discernible trend toward a decline in demand for mass-produced teas, with many individuals seeking ethically sourced blends,” says Uzma Irfan, founder of the Bengaluru-based Sublime House of Tea, which stocks a wide range of premium blends crafted from natural ingredients, without the use of artificial flavors. “This shift underscores an emphasis on wellness, sustainability, and traceability…The concept of premiumization transcends exclusivity; it is fundamentally about enhancing quality, enriching experience, and fostering a deeper connection to the products we consume,” says Irfan.

Tea as Therapy

This shift from the traditional chai to curated infusions is rooted in a growing awareness around preventive health and the therapeutic potential of herbs. People are turning to time-tested botanicals like tulsi, ashwagandha, and mulethi not only as supplements but as everyday ingredients in their wellness routines. “The idea of a tea that heals—something that soothes the nervous system or boosts metabolism—is no longer niche,” says Akshi Khandelwal, Founder & CEO, Butterfly Ayurveda & Cafe Swasthya.

From a formulation standpoint, there’s also greater emphasis on efficacy and consistency. Wellness teas are being developed with a deeper understanding of both traditional wisdom and modern science, often produced in more controlled and certified environments to ensure purity, potency, and safety,” says Akshi Khandelwal, Founder & CEO, Butterfly Ayurveda & Cafe Swasthya.

A desire for authenticity & history

The Indian tea landscape is becoming more discerning and experience-driven. While chai remains a daily comfort, there is a clear and growing shift towards premium, whole-leaf, and heritage teas that offer both depth and distinction. “Tea is no longer just a beverage; it is fast becoming a lifestyle choice anchored in culture, well-being, and quiet luxury,” says Annapurna Batra, COO, Newby Teas, India. “Today’s tea drinker is more informed and intentional. Health consciousness, global exposure, and a revival of traditional wellness practices are all shaping preferences,” said Batra. Newby Teas has seen increasing interest from Indian consumers in classic and rare blends, such as Elegant Darjeeling, Silken Pyramids, and curated wellness infusions. “We have observed that our Indian customers are not only seeking purity and taste but also a connection to history and craftsmanship,” she said.  With a growing appreciation for the provenance of ingredients and the artistry of tea making, there is a move toward blends that tell a story, whether it’s a rare estate harvest, a time-honored recipe, or a tea presented in fine bone china, she added. “The desire for authenticity is redefining luxury in the tea space.”

Cups of Resilience

The COVID-19 pandemic was a wake-up call that changed how we think about health. It made people more proactive—less focused on curing illness and more on building resilience. Preventive health and holistic practices have become an integral part of daily life. There is also a generational shift in values. Younger urban consumers are increasingly drawn to rituals that balance the mind and body—whether it’s herbal teas, yoga, meditation, or mindful eating.

“Health is no longer about quick fixes but more about integrating simple, natural habits that support long-term well-being,” said Butterfly Ayurveda’s Khandelwal. “This has created space for a return to traditional systems like Ayurveda, which take a more comprehensive view of health. There is growing respect for its diagnostic methods, dosha-based understanding, and food-as-medicine approach—all of which align with current wellness trends globally,” says Butterfly Ayurveda’s Khandelwal.

A Cup of Choice

Thoughtfully packaged teas have become a gifting favorite for celebrations, weddings, and corporate occasions. There is growing admiration for brands that pair exceptional tea with timeless presentation. Consumers are increasingly seeking tea that not only provides a caffeine boost but also nurtures the body and the mind. Additionally, cold brews and ready-to-drink teas are gaining traction, particularly among younger demographics that prioritize convenience without compromising health or flavor.

“Another trend gaining momentum is the perception of tea as a lifestyle choice,” says Irfan of Sublime House of Tea. “At Sublime, we wholeheartedly embrace these shifts in consumer behavior. Each of our blends is meticulously crafted to deliver a comprehensive sensory experience: visually appealing, aromatic, and healthy,” she said.

Tea has certainly transcended from its role as a morning beverage in India; it represents an experience, a moment of reflection, and a conscious consumer choice.
