Indian Americans in the Bay Area are aging. The conversation around aging should evolve, too. As Indian American seniors enter their later years, families are looking for guidance, connection, and culturally relevant care. Our project empowers them with the resources, stories, and community that celebrates aging with confidence, dignity, and belonging.

Why We Need This

We are one of the fastest aging immigrant communities in the U.S. Yet we remain invisible in mainstream aging research and services. In the Bay Area Indian American diaspora of over 350,000, 13% are above 65. We surveyed seniors, caregivers, and service providers about critical gaps. They told us about caregiver shortages, cultural taboos around aging, language barriers, isolation, and absence of disaggregated data on Indian American aging needs — which leave seniors and caregivers without guidance or resources.

What if our seniors had access to care that felt like home? Are working solutions waiting to be found? We aim to find answers for you. No one else is doing this.

Why Us?

Aging is a journey best navigated together. India Currents is the only newsroom with roots, trust, and knowledge of the community. Our reporting will go beyond the problem — we will document what communities like ours are doing to solve it. Our project will empower South Asian seniors and their families through resources, stories, and community to navigate the journey of aging with dignity.

South Asian senior and caregiver

“There is so much people need to know about the cultural, social, traditional, and religious needs of individuals in the South Asian community — and none of it is accessible through a centralized database or resource system.”

— Survey respondent, Senior

“I am sandwich generation — with an aging parent in India and an aging parent-in-law in the US. We have to rethink how we live, where we live, and how to plan travel, if at all.”

— Survey respondent, Caregiver

What We Will Deliver

  • 10 in-depth stories
  • 2 Solutions Spotlight Podcasts
  • One Community Outreach event in the Bay Area
  • A Resource Hub to fill information gaps
  • Collaboration with stakeholders (advocates, CBOs and local lawmakers) to influence institutional change

What Is Solutions Journalism?

We understand that aging has challenges, gaps, and shortages. But instead of writing about the problems, we want to focus on what people are doing to address them. We will look at models being tried, what’s working and what’s not, so we can offer our community actionable insights on how to move forward.
