Operating overtly, as well as quietly in the background, Artificial Intelligence provides both distinct benefits and real psychological and structural risks. It affects your health and wellbeing through the consumer technology you wear on your body, the software your doctor uses, and your daily digital habits. 

Far from a future concept, AI is already a major determinant of human health. Public-health organizations and clinical researchers increasingly classify AI not just as a medical tool, but “as a structural ‘digital determinant of health’ that actively reshapes biological outcomes, mental wellness, and healthcare equity on a global scale.”

Scientific discoveries and disruptive technological advancements over the past 300 years have changed human lives and led to significant improvements in health, wellbeing and lifespan*. The striking difference between those advancements and this latest disruptor – AI – is the amazing speed at which it’s driving change, unabated, and faster than people, institutions and governments can keep up.

How exactly is AI doing this?

AI is changing modern patient care by shaping clinical decision-making. Algorithms dictate patient priority in emergency triage, flag potential malignancies in radiology scans, and suggest pharmaceutical dosages to physicians. Modern smartwatches and fitness trackers use AI to synthesize your biological data and provide personalized health metrics, warning users of anomalies like sleep apnea and heart irregularities, and urge you to seek medical care. 

The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that governments and hospital networks use AI to evaluate neighborhood data, track disease outbreaks, and distribute public health funding. Algorithms determine which communities get access to new clinics, how insurance companies process or deny patient claims, and how resources are funneled to address local environmental and economic stressors. 

AI impacts human cognition and mental health. Constant exposure to AI’s generative tools and predictive algorithms in the workplace is modifying human behavior, leading to ‘technostress,’ social isolation, and increased anxiety; public health researchers warn that offloading basic critical thinking, symptom analysis, and emotional regulation to AI chatbots can permanently alter problem-solving skills and long-term psychological resilience. 

Peer-reviewed studies highlight that AI can amplify health inequities through built-in biases in models trained on non-representative demographic data. Commercial healthcare algorithms can systematically miscalculate the medical needs of marginalized communities, resulting in documented real-world harms, including longer wait times for appointments and higher rates of underdiagnosis for minority patients.

Positive shifts improve quality of care, speed and research

AI is driving unprecedented improvements by supercharging medical accuracy, cutting bureaucratic delays, and deeply empowering patients. When used correctly as a collaborative assistant, it’s a vital tool that strengthens—rather than replaces—the critical relationship between patients and their healthcare providers.

The most successful and promising advancements span patient care, clinical speed, and global health research.  Radiology is radically faster at catching hidden anomalies; AI systems act as a tireless second set of eyes, analyzing scans and skin lesions to flag micro-malignancies long before a human doctor could spot them, helping with more accurate and earlier cancer detection. They help save critical time for high-stakes conditions like acute strokes or brain hemorrhages. 

Specialized AI image-triage software flags life-threatening scans instantly, automatically bumping them to the top of a radiologist’s queue to shave precious minutes off emergency response times.

The rapid rollout of secure, ambient AI scribes is actively transforming the clinical environment. By listening to a patient visit and instantly generating structured, private medical notes, AI tools allow doctors to look directly at their patients instead of staring at a computer screen.  This reduces clinician burnout and promotes better interaction with patients, freeing up mental energy to focus entirely on empathy, complex problem-solving, and direct patient communication.

AI platforms are enabling scientists to simulate millions of molecular combinations in mere days – as opposed to many years, fast-tracking the creation of new drugs and highly targeted therapies for rare diseases and aggressive cancers. 

The rapidly developing field of Predictive Structural Biology is building on the historic discovery of DNA.  Systems like Google DeepMind’s AlphaFold have mapped out the 3D structures of virtually all known proteins, giving global researchers an open-source blueprint to understand diseases at a foundational, molecular level.

For people living with chronic illnesses like diabetes or hypertension, AI-driven wellness companion apps analyze continuous glucose monitor data and daily fitness patterns to provide real-time, highly personalized lifestyle adjustments. 

These automated coaches gently nudge users to take their medication, drink water, or adjust their meals based on their body’s active metrics, successfully keeping patients stable and preventing costly, stressful emergency room visits.

Automated systems handle medical-billing codes and insurance prior authorizations, reducing the administrative delays that typically stall your prescriptions or specialist appointments.

AI-influenced downsides, risks and behaviors

However, AI is turning out to be a double-edged sword. While online access to medical information and data empowers people to take charge of their health, it frequently causes psychological distress, dangerous self-treatment choices, and delayed professional care, sometimes posing risks to mental wellbeing. 

Over-reliance on AI companions or chatbots can lead to digital fatigue, reduced real-world human connection, and social isolation. Constant notifications, automated workplace performance tracking, and the fear of AI-driven job displacement can spike stress levels and anxiety

Searching for medical symptoms via public AI search tools can generate inaccurate medical information or push unverified “quick-fix” supplements, resulting in flawed advice and misinformation traps

Structural and environmental threats are emerging, such as digital privacy breaches that put the privacy of sensitive biomedical information at risk, and degradation of local environments due to massive AI data centers that release toxic air pollutants and consume vast amounts of local drinking water, reducing public health in surrounding neighborhoods. 

Searching for mild, everyday symptoms (like a headache or a muscle twitch) frequently leads to self-diagnosis and escalatory online searches, sometimes leading to a cycle of panic.  This is known to trigger “cyberchondria,” a behavioral pattern where compulsive online symptom-checking actively spikes anxiety, causing clinical distress and leaving individuals terrified that they have a rare or terminal illness. 

Some social media platforms oversimplify complex, highly nuanced conditions such as ADHD, autism, or PTSD, leading teenagers and young adults to mistake human experiences like normal sadness, temporary distraction, or awkwardness for clinical psychiatric disorders. 

Furthermore, social media and search network algorithms track watch history and continuously feed similar information, creating a feedback loop; this continuous exposure creates an echo chamber – known as confirmation bias – that convinces users they have a disease, despite a complete lack of verified laboratory tests or expert medical evaluation. 

Believing a digital diagnosis leads many people to skip real care and attempt risky self-medication routines or purchase unverified supplements online. Conversely, many individuals abruptly stop taking vital, doctor-prescribed medications because an unverified internet post or video led them to believe their treatment was harmful.  

Under extreme time constraints, clinicians can fall victim to “automation bias” – blindly trusting an AI diagnostic summary, script draft, or chart triage recommendation without conducting a rigorous, manual double-check. When medical professionals blindly trust AI tools without double-checking them, a single hidden mistake in the software can rapidly hurt a large number of people.

What should you do for your health & wellbeing in the age of AI?

AI and digital tools are incredibly powerful “co-pilots” that can be very useful; however, you should firmly stay in charge and both protect and promote your health & wellbeing. Learn to leverage the precision of technology without sacrificing human medical expertise or your own mental peace. 

Use your smartwatch or fitness tracker to identify broad, weekly or monthly trends in your resting heart rate, sleep cycles, and activity levels to adjust your lifestyle choices. Do not obsess over a single night of bad sleep data or a temporary spike in your stress metrics, which can trigger anxiety. 

Practice safe, online health research, using verified sources and trusted medical centers. Avoid social media for medical advice. Protect your digital mental health, setting boundaries on device use, and above all, prioritize real, human connections.
