The beginning of a new year is often marked by changes, goals, and commitments individuals make to see an impact. Those looking to make meaningful change should consider opportunities that can make a long-term difference.

For those looking to transition into work that immediately impacts communities, I encourage them to attend the Santa Clara County Office of Education’s Step into an Education Career on February 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event helps individuals learn and prepare for the joys of a career in education as a teacher, counselor, school nurse, speech-language pathologist, and audiologist. In years past, some might remember this event as Step Into Teaching, however, it has been modified to include an insight to career pathways that require credentialing.

From programs to retirement, the Step into an Education Career event provides information about navigating the road to becoming a professional in education. The opportunity to interact with educators and experts about the rewards and challenges of a career in education is also available. In 2023, 169 participants attended the event that was held in February and August. An additional four job fairs were held to promote the opportunity to work and fill open positions for youth mental health and wellness, paraeducators, teachers and classified employees.

To alleviate financial stress, there are several grants available to those drawn to earning a credential. Grant opportunities include the Early Education Teacher Development Grant, Golden State Teacher Grant, School-Based Mental Health Services Grant, and the Mental Health Service Professional Demonstration Grant. From 2022-23 180 applicants in Santa Clara County were awarded more than $3 million through the Golden State Teacher Grant. The U.S. Department of Education awarded the SCCOE a $976,050 grant to increase mental health professionals in schools. Grants are being utilized to cover tuition costs and living expenses for participants pursuing their Master of Social Work Degree and School Social Work Credential. Ten of these participants are expected to complete their programs by June 2024.

Being in education means so much more than a job to secure a paycheck. Working in education means making a difference in the lives of children, and shaping them into the adults who will carry lessons with them over a lifetime. As a culturally vibrant community, the residents of Santa Clara County have so much to offer current and future students.
