The Government of India’s Ministry of External Affairs announced the appointment of Shri Vinay Mohan Kwatra as the next Ambassador of India to the United States of America.

Kwatra who retired as Foreign Secretary last week will go to Washington to fill the Ambassador role that has been without an incumbent for more than six months. The seasoned diplomat with extensive experience will succeed Taranjit Sandhu who retired in January. A graduate of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Kwatra has had a long career as an Indian diplomat. He has served assignments in Washington D.C., Beijing, Paris, and Kathmandu, served as India’s envoy to France from 2017 to 2020, and also as Ambassador to Nepal from 2020 to 2022.

The currently strained India-US relations will test Kwatra’s experience and skills as a diplomat.

In November 2023 US Justice Department indicted Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national extradited to the US for an alleged attempt to assassinate US national Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, founder of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), who the Indian Government has designated a terrorist. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow also has created friction between the two countries. The outcome of the US election this November will pose another quandary for Kwatra as a Republican win means a shift in foreign policy priorities.

The multilingual Kwatra, who is fluent in French, English, and Hindi, will have to tap into his considerable understanding of international relations and strategic diplomacy to navigate the dynamics between New Delhi and Washington.
