Our world is home to the largest generation of young people recorded. It is crucial young adults, adolescents and children are equipped to process our greatest issues, such as climate change. They can and currently contribute to solutions that affect them now and in the future.
The annual county-wide literacy initiative, Silicon Valley Reads, educates, inspires and encourages all community members to explore the challenges and opportunities of creating a sustainable world for everyone. The 2024 theme features a selection of books and free events that coincide with “A Greener Tomorrow Starts Today.”
As pointed out in the literary selections for students through Silicon Valley Reads, youth and children are experiencing the effects of climate change – in California that includes severe weather, pollution, and wildfires, which all negatively impact their health and development.
Many of the Silicon Valley Reads events offered are geared towards young people. They have already shown they have ideas, spirit, and commitment to bring about the positive change we collectively need. Coupled with education, young people are more than capable of showing their communities (adults, included) that actions taken today create a positive future.
The following events may be of interest to families:
- Parenting in a Climate Crisis
- Read Among the Redwoods at Walden West
- Author Talk & Writing Activity at The Tech Interactive
