Ten years ago, independent musical artist Memento was fresh out of college, working at his first job, when something snapped within. He called his mother during the lunch break and ranted about his job for an hour, saying, “I can’t do this!”

“That’s when the line was drawn,” he said in an interview over Zoom. Shortly after, Memento quit his job, left his parents’ home in Palo Alto and moved his base to Los Angeles, the crucible of creativity and commerce in the music industry.

Now, with dozens of songs in his catalog garnering thousands of listeners on Spotify, Memento  is a seasoned professional, who has charted his own course in the music industry.

In an interview published in full on YouTube, he spoke about how he honed in on his musical aesthetic, the ups and downs of being an independent artist, and leveraged social media strategically to grow his base. He also popped the hood and gave a short demo of how he put together his single “Sway”, an insightful demonstration for any aspiring musician, independent artist, or music professional.

When asked about the name Memento, he said, “When you hear a certain song, it’ll take you back to the moment where you first heard it, or when you first were into it, listening to it. So they are mementos of those times… And I want to basically create mementos for my listeners through my catalog.”
