Born into a small tribal village in Assam where women were expected to remain invisible, Anuradha Kuli, built instead- a collective of over sixty craftspeople, a living practice rooted in the silk traditions of the
Ahom Dynasty. Her textiles draw on three distinct Assamese silks – Muga, a golden wild silk produced nowhere else; Eri; and Mulberry – alongside cotton, all dyed with turmeric, lac, madder, indigo and other
plant-based pigments.
Anuradha designs each collection, supervises thread production, and passes the work to her weaver artisans. Muga, once reserved for royalty, is singular to this region-naturally warm, naturally golden. Anuradha’s work honors this uniqueness. Her designs are un- compromising in material honesty. For her years of contribution to handlooms, she was honored with the Sant Kabir National Award last year.
Fyoli Fyoli is a social enterprise focusing on naturally colored textiles and natural dye – reminiscent of the famed muslin Jamdanis of an earlier era. The textiles represent high-count needlework Jamdanis made with handspun cotton yarns, silk and zari, in thoughtful collaboration with grassroots artisan communities practicing ancestral crafts. You can learn more about Fyoli Fyoli’s vision and ethos here.
