Free Kathak Dance & Live Music at the Wende Museum

Celebrated kathak artist Rukhmani Mehta, Founding Artist & Co-Artistic Director of Los Angeles-based kathak dance company Leela Dance Collective, will perform Sandhi November 13 at The Wende Museum. Mehta will perform this traditional kathak solo with acclaimed musicians Jayanta Banerjee on sitar and Salar Nader on tabla.
In this intimate evening of dance and music, Mehta draws inspiration from the Sanskrit concept of sandhi, a meeting point where opposing energies intertwine and boundaries blur. The performance invites audiences into the many dualities that exist within Kathak and give the form its vitality: tradition and the present moment; the multiplicity of human expression and divine oneness; and the collective story of a people/culture and the individual voice of one artist.
Sandhi also features sitarist and an eminent musician and composer Jayanta Banerjee and tabla virtuoso Salar Nader, who has toured widely with numerous musicians and groups including Grammy-winning Third Coast Percussion.
“Kathak is originally a solo art form, as are all North Indian music and dance forms,” shares Rukhmani Mehta. “The traditional kathak solo—usually performed in intimate settings—is a raw, unproduced performance of dance, music, and storytelling highlighting individual expression, improvisation, and dialogue and exchange between dancer, musician, and audience. Sandhi is my effort to keep the art of kathak alive in its essential form and nature.”
