On April 7, the Shakti School of Bharatanatyam and the Arpana Dance Company will present Basant Utsav – Spring Dance Festival at the James Armstrong Theatre in Torrance. The show is a momentous coming together of two reputed South Asian dance schools in Southern California and is supported by the Arpana Alumni Dance Fund @ Ektaa Center.
Starting at 3 p.m., the show will feature Vaibhav Arekar and Rama Vaidyanathan, who are Bharatanatyam artists from India. Arekar, who founded the Sankhya Dance Company in India, will be performing two solo performances titled Pravaaha and Debotar Grash, the latter inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s poem of the same name.
Vaidyanathan will be accompanied by her students Kavya Ganesh, Reshika Sivakumar, Shubhamani Chandrashekar, and Vaishnavi Dhore in performing her piece titled New Dimensions to the Margam. In this performance, she will present compositions that are completely rooted in Bharatanatyam, with her own fresh perspective.
