Vandana Kumar is the Publisher and CEO of India Currents, the premier digital platform serving Indian Americans across the United States. A new immigrant when she co-founded the magazine in 1987, she led India Currents through three decades as an award-winning print publication before transforming it into a fully digital, nonprofit newsroom in 2019.
A trailblazer in ethnic media, Vandana has earned numerous honors, including the Asian American Hero Award from the County of Santa Clara and two Leadership in Business Awards from the California State Legislature Assembly. In 2024, India Currents received the prestigious Community Impact Award from the Asian American Journalists Association, recognizing the newsroom’s role in elevating underrepresented voices.
Vandana serves on the Board of the California News Publishers Association and is a Knight Fellow, as well as an AAJA Simon and June Li Leadership Transformation Fellow in the Media Transformation Challenge—testament to her commitment to innovation, equity, and the future of journalism.
