The UK virtual band Gorillaz paid tribute to the remarkable legacy of legendary singer Asha Bhosle during their sold-out performance at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, giving Indian audiences a preview of the cultural celebration they can expect when The Mountain Tour arrives in Mumbai and Bengaluru in January 2027.

The one-of-a-kind show placed Indian music and culture firmly at the heart of the evening, celebrating some of the legendary artists who contributed to the band’s critically acclaimed album ‘The Mountain.’

One of the evening’s most memorable moments saw Gorillaz founder Damon Albarn welcome Asha Bhosle’s granddaughter Zanai to the stage for a special performance of The Shadowy Light, a song from The Mountain, featuring her grandmother’s vocals.

The tribute celebrated Asha Bhosle’s immense contribution to music and brought her enduring legacy to a packed stadium audience, connecting generations of Indian musical talent.

Gorrilaz founders Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett brought their groundbreaking virtual band to life in a stadium setting for the very first time, as they were joined by the 13-strong Gorillaz live band and 24 guest performers from over 15 countries around the world.

The event highlighted The Mountain’s global, collaborative spirit, with Indian artists playing a central role. The show featured Indian collaborators — bansuri virtuoso Ajay Prasanna and singer Asha Puthli, spotlighting India’s influence on the band’s acclaimed album ‘The Mountain.’ The album showcases an exceptional lineup of Indian collaborators, including Anoushka Shankar, and sarod maestros Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash.

“Thank you so much for attending this mass gathering of multi-cultural, multi-generational music, we appreciate you.” — Damon Albarn

For Indian fans, the performance at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium demonstrated how deeply Indian musical influences are woven into The Mountain. Many of the creative and musical elements showcased during the tribute to Asha Bhosle and other Indian collaborators will be part of Gorillaz’s long-awaited debut performances in India next January.

“We are all one under the sun.” — Jamie Hewlett

Gorillaz is an English virtual band created in 1998 by musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett. The band is built around four animated members—2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs—whose stories are told through music videos, artwork, comics, and animation.

Known for constant innovation, Gorillaz blends genres such as hip hop, electronic music, and world music, often collaborating with artists from around the globe. While many musicians contribute to the project, Albarn remains its only permanent musical member.

Through Gorillaz, Albarn moved beyond the Britpop sound of his band Blur to create a boundary-crossing musical project with a global perspective.

The performance at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium gave Indian audiences a glimpse of what awaits when The Mountain Tour arrives in Mumbai and Bengaluru in January 2027.
