Urfi Javed guns for Shah Rukh’s stardom

Follow Kar Lo Yaar, the latest reality series on Amazon Prime Video, offers a bold and unfiltered glimpse into the complex life of Urfi Javed, the Instagram sensation known for her unconventional, viral fashion choices and unapologetic personality. Seeing Urfi as she truly is—driven by a desire for wealth, fame, penthouse suites, flashy cars, and grandiose living—is eye-opening.  Her ambition to achieve the same celebrity status as Shah Rukh Khan is striking. Directed by Sandeep Kukreja and produced by Fazilla Allana and Kamna Menezes under SOL Productions, this nine-episode series delves deep into the world of Urfi and the people who support her, including her family, media team, and close friends.

From the very first episode, Follow Kar Lo Yaar showcases all the trappings of a typical reality show, yet it is more melodramatic and confrontational, much like Urfi’s personality. The show boasts couture, glitz, glamor, and photoshoots, but it also reveals how Urfi runs her enterprise by gut instinct, often yelling and screaming at anyone who tries to control her irrepressible urges. She is addicted to Botox, cosmetic fillers, hydrafacials, and lifts, offering them to her family and boyfriend as if they were “cotton candy.” She enjoys ordering Bombay street food like vada pav, but attempts to be healthy by pairing it with avocado toast.

However, hell hath no fury if Urfi is thwarted, manipulated or contradicted in her choices—whether it’s food, photoshoots, or media opportunities. Urfi frequently has full-blown tantrums, outbursts of foul language, and public meltdowns. It takes all her sisters—Urusa, Asfi, and Dolly Javed—to calm her down, but eventually, Urfi does what Urfi wants.

Reality family drama, warts and all

The show offers an intimate look at their close-knit yet complex family dynamics. Her manager, Sameer Aslam, and publicist, Zakiya Sultana, play pivotal roles in managing the chaos that surrounds Urfi, providing insight into the pressures of maintaining her public image.

Cinematographer Magesh Madhan’s use of a multi-camera setup captures the raw, unscripted moments that define the series. Whether it’s Urfi brainstorming wild fashion ideas with her team—like a dress made of orange slices, eggs, or paper cups—navigating the ups and downs of her personal relationships, or confessing to her psychologist about the childhood trauma that contributed to her histrionic personality, Madhan’s camera doesn’t shy away from showing the grittiness of her life beyond Instagram and TikTok.

The series also introduces viewers to Urfi’s support system, including her makeup artist Sahel Habib Khan, and stylist Sanya Malhotra, who help bring her bold vision to life. Cameos by Orhan Awatramani and Munawar Faruqui, a stand-up comic who understands Urfi’s vibe and her drive to get ahead, add flair to the show, but it’s Urfi who remains the undeniable star.

Urfi: More than just a viral sensation

What makes Follow Kar Lo Yaar stand out is its focus on the human side of social media fame. We see Urfi as more than just a viral sensation; she’s a sister, a friend, and a professional navigating a world that’s as demanding as it is glamorous. The show doesn’t shy away from portraying the challenges she faces—from dealing with online trolls to balancing her personal and professional life—making it a refreshing departure from typically glossy reality TV fare.

Running between 28 to 35 minutes per episode, Follow Kar Lo Yaar is a quick binge, but it leaves a lasting impression. It’s an authentic, sometimes chaotic, but always entertaining look at what it takes to be an Instagram star in today’s world.

Urfi’s need to succeed

For fans of Urfi Javed, Follow Kar Lo Yaar is a must-watch, offering a behind-the-scenes look at her life that’s as unpredictable and captivating as she is. Even for those new to her, the series offers a fascinating peek into the making of a modern-day social media icon. In my view, it is both frightening and inspiring. We all have the need to be validated to some extent but in Urfi the need to succeed is humongous! There are likely many youngsters trying to emulate Urfi Javed, hoping to get ahead with nothing but the oomph of their boldness, bravado, and gut instinct.
