Santa Clara County, CA – Several prominent Asian media entities are coming together to hold the inaugural Asian American Media Roundtable in Santa Clara County, launching the voter education initiative “Know Your Candidates.” This initiative aims to inform and engage the Asian community in the political process by providing a platform for conversations with candidates running for office.

Event Details:

What: The inaugural event in the series will feature a conversation with Silicon Valley Assemblymember Evan Low, who is running for Congress to succeed longtime Representative Anna Eshoo in District 16. Evan Low, a fourth-generation Californian, made history in 2006 as the first Asian-American, openly gay, and one of the youngest individuals ever elected to City Council. His pioneering journey continued in 2009 when he became the youngest Asian-American mayor in the nation. In 2014, Evan’s commitment to enhancing lives and achieving tangible results led him to the California Assembly.

Santa Clara County has experienced significant growth over the past decade, with its population reaching 1,936,259, an 8.7% increase, making it the fifth-fastest-growing among California’s top 10 counties by population. 

For the first time, people identifying as Asian now represent the largest racial or ethnic group in the county, making up 38.9% of the population according to the 2020 census. The Asian population in Santa Clara County grew by 33% from the 2010 census numbers. 

Community leaders Diana Ding, Vandana Kumar, Don Orozco, Minh Than Tran, and Joel Wong recognize the importance of the Asian community standing together to elevate the visibility of candidates who can represent them equitably. Collectively they reach 500,000 individuals every month. 

This event represents a collaborative effort to ensure that the voices of the Asian community in Santa Clara County are heard and that candidates address the issues that matter most to them. By participating in this roundtable, the diverse community media will have the opportunity to engage with Assemblymember Evan Low and gain a deeper understanding of his platform and vision for the future.
