On January 20, 2024, hundreds of Indian-Americans from the Bay Area diaspora came together to acknowledge the inauguration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya through a celebratory car rally. Volunteers from the Bay Area’s Hindu community organized the entire grassroots event without institutional support from any organization.
The rally began at the Baylands Park in Sunnyvale at 1 pm and passed through Union City before crossing the Bay into San Mateo. The procession of cars then headed north through San Francisco and motored along Golden Gate Bridge, before crossing back to the East Bay on the Richmond-San Rafael bridge. The rally ended at the Warm Springs BART station.
After the rally, a group of Tesla owners put on a synchronized light show set to music, while prasad was distributed among the gathered crowd. Long after sundown, the rally goers’ spirits remained high as they continued their festivities, dancing to the beat of the dhol in the foyer of the BART station to protect from the rain.
