The South Asian New Works Festival

Join us for The South Asian New Works Festival: Bringing Community Together Through The Arts, a celebration of new South Asian voices, stories, and creative work at SJSU King Library.

 

The festival brings together playwrights, performers, filmmakers, and visual artists for staged readings, film screenings, exhibitions, and conversation.

Venue: The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library at San Jose State University

 

This year’s featured artists:

 

Playwrights:

  • Nayantara Nayar, Lost Waters  – A compelling new theatrical script exploring memory, identity, and environmental themes through a live staged reading.

  • Deepika Arwind, Phantasmagoria – A bold, imaginative new play reading that weaves surreal storytelling with deep personal and socio-cultural reflection.

 

Filmmakers:

  • Sarita Khurana and Sunita Prasad, Seat at the Table: South Asians’ Rise in American Politics – This documentary work investigates South Asian representation, community leadership, and women claiming space in politics.

  • Alka Raghuram, Burqa Boxers  – This powerful documentary follows young Muslim women in Kolkata, India, breaking barriers through boxing.

  • Moderators: Taimur Ali Ahmed and Sukanya Chakrabarti.

 

Visual artists:

  •  Ria Sharma – Painter; cubic figuration in acrylic, blending rescued textile and cubic abstraction.

  • Priyanka Rana – Sculptor; bridges cultural memory, ecology, and material intelligence while working with untreated California woods.
