“Not Your Masi’s Generation”

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF — The second installation of ASHA’s “Not Your Masi’s Generation”exhibition opens from August 5 to August 28 at the Medicine for Nightmares Bookstore and Gallery in San Francisco, CA. The exhibition is a multidisciplinary and interactive solo exhibition that explores the East African Gujarati diaspora and the impact of the 1972 exile on future gene through the telling of her family’s stories.
Not Your Masi’s Generation is a culmination of 13 years of arts-based archival research, creation, and storytelling of her artist’s family journey during the East African Gujarati diaspora and the impact of the 1972 exile and how future generations in her family have taken it upon themselves to use art to navigate their own identities while honoring their ancestors.
“When I was younger…I didn’t understand any of it (…) I was kind of just a witness to all of it. It made me feel uncomfortable,” an excerpt from an interview the artist had conducted with her cousin Anisa. These are just one of many interviews the artist has conducted with her family members during the project.
