Dan Weiss: Tabla Solo

BROOKLYN, NY — Open Arts Studio’s 605A Music Series presents Dan Weiss: Solo Tabla, an intimate evening with one of contemporary music’s most adventurous percussionists, on Thursday, October 29 at Open Arts Studio in DUMBO, Brooklyn.
Best known internationally as a jazz drummer, composer, and bandleader, Weiss has built a musical language that crosses jazz, Indian classical music, contemporary composition, metal, and improvisation. The New York Times named him among “Five Drummers Whose Time Is Now,” while Modern Drummer has recognized him among its top jazz drummers. His acclaimed large-ensemble recording Fourteen was named one of The New York Times’ best recordings of 2014. For this rare solo performance, however, Weiss steps away from the drum set and focuses entirely on the tabla, the instrument he has studied for more than twenty-five years under master tabla player Pandit
Samir Chatterjee.Weiss’s relationship to Indian classical music is not a side pursuit but a central thread running through his musical life.
He has performed with renowned Indian classical musicians Ashish Khan and Ramesh Misra, recorded the solo tabla album 3dcd, and explored the translation of Indian rhythmic language to the drum set on recordings including
Teental Drumset Solo and Jhaptal Drumset Solo. His deep engagement with rhythmic cycles, improvisation, and the raga tradition has also profoundly shaped his work as a jazz composer and drummer. The October 29 concert offers audiences a chance to encounter that musical foundation at its source: Weiss alone with the tabla, in the close and informal setting of Open Arts Studio.
Dan Weiss: Solo Tabla continues the 605A Music Series at Open Arts Studio, bringing exceptional musicians into an intimate space where audiences can experience their work at close range.
