The founders
Bollywood Bingo is the brainchild of the husband and wife team of Himanshu Jolly and Shweta Kapoor, who wanted to interject some “masala” into the traditional game of bingo. “I always had a passion for cinema and theatre. Growing up in India I developed a deep appreciation for Bollywood. During COVID when we were all stuck at home, our friends would meet online and play games. Bollywood Bingo was born out of the sheer need to entertain my group of friends. Songs, drama, suspense, dialogues, acting, surprise endings–all the filmy masalas got incorporated into Bollywood Bingo,” says Jolly.
A self-described entertainer at heart and a banker by profession, Jolly based the game on the Indian tombola/housie games traditionally played during Diwali Mela in Delhi. At the heart of the game is a shared love of the vibrant and lively world of Hindi movies and songs. A carefully curated selection of popular and iconic Bollywood references serves as the call in the game, giving players a chance to test their knowledge of classic and contemporary films, music, and culture. When each number in the game is revealed, you act it out in a Bollywood song/dialogue/trivia. This taps into a distinct memory that is different for each player, the nostalgia, love, and heartbreak are different for each of us. Therefore, even when playing the same game each player has a uniquely different experience.
A game for family and friends
To play the game each player receives a bingo card adorned with Bollywood-themed elements. Picture frames of legendary actors, memorable dance sequences, famous dialogues, and classic movie posters can all find a place on the bingo grid. The cards are carefully crafted to capture the essence of Bollywood, ensuring a diverse and exciting array of elements. The aim is to mark off the elements as they appear during the game, striving to complete a row or a full card to claim your Bollywood Bingo victory.
The board game was designed to be played at home with your group of friends and family, but now Himanshu and Shweta are taking it on the road. That’s when this husband-wife team shines. They are such quintessential entertainers that when they host Bollywood Bingo nights at private events, it’s like a “housie” on fire! “We customize each event, tailored to the host and what they are celebrating. The goal for each private event is for all the guests to participate and make the day special. We begin with getting to know the host–countless hours and dozens of questions later, we weave their life story and unique memories into Bollywood song and dance numbers,” says Jolly.
5 editions in development
Product design, marketing, and manufacturing are largely done by Shweta Kapoor. “2024 is an exciting year for us. We have 5 editions in various stages of development along with an iPad version,” she adds.
