India Currents gave me a voice in days I was very lost. Having my articles selected for publishing was very validating – Shailaja Dixit, Executive Director, Narika, Fremont

Ashwini Bhide’s Hindustani vocal concert will be held at the state-of-the-art Patil Auditorium at the Harker School in San Jose on Saturday April 13th from 6 pm to 9 pm. This concert is brought to you by Swar Sudha. Accompanying Ashwini will be Pt. Ramdas Palsule on tabla and Siddhesh Bicholkar on the harmonium.

Ashwini Bhide Deshpande is an outstanding vocalist of the famed “Jaipur-Atrauli” khayal-gayaki tradition. She is an exemplar of this hoary tradition and through her work, she has placed her own individual imprint on the tradition as well. Her live concerts have been acclaimed for their delightful presentations and for their high aesthetic and musical quality. As a celebrated artiste of Akashwani and Doordarshan, Ashwini has been featured in several national programs and AIR Sangeet Sammelans.

Ashwini’s music is characterized by a blend of tonal sweetness coupled with vitality and emotion along with impeccable raga structure-architecture. Her raga delineation shows an unerring grasp over the grammar of the raga while maintaining soulfulness in singing. She explores the pathos of rare and complex (“achchop”) ragas characteristic of her gharana. In this effort, she has received invaluable guidance from her guru the late Pt. Ratnakar Pai, a senior stalwart of the gharana. This learning, her mother’s unstinting support ,and her own mature introspection has led Ashwini to explore new horizons in Hindustani classical music.

Although a classicist by temperament and training, Ashwini is equally at ease with lighter varieties like Thumri-Dadra and Bhajans/Abhangs. Her fluency in Sanskrit enriches her repertoire further through the inclusion of stotras and /stutis. Ashwini has added to her devotional repertoire by scoring the music for many of her devotional presentations.

Ashwini’s debut recording album was released in 1985 by HMV and several more have followed thereafter under various banners including Rhythm House, Times Music, Sony Music, Music Today, Navras Records and Universal Music among others.

Ashwini Bhide Deshpande will be accompanied by the great accompanist Pt. Ramdas Palsule on tabla. He is a very familiar name to rasikas of Hindustani music as a tabla player of great repute, and he is one of the senior disciples of renowned tabla maestro Taalyogi Pandit Suresh Talwalkar. Accompanying Ashwini Bhide on the harmonium will be Siddhesh Bicholkar. He is one of the talented disciples of Guruji Tulsidas Borkar.
