From the Sanskrit word ‘Seva’ meaning service, Sevathon Walkathon was born as the India Community Center initiative with an aim to set the standard as the largest social and service platform of its kind in the Bay Area for a Half Marathon/Walkathon event. It recognizes, supports, and nurtures a spirit of giving by empowering individuals of diverse backgrounds to unite and strengthen their communities. Walkers, runners, non profits, sponsors, family and friends are all part of the Sevathon family, as they enable each non-profit organization to deliver its message and further its cause.
The event is in line with ICC’s mission: To promote Indian culture and values by providing social, cultural, recreational and community programs, thereby uniting the Indian community, and raising awareness about Indian culture in the local community.
ICC welcomes all without regard to racial, ethnic, regional, religious, political, or socio economic background and its mission seeks:
- To make a positive difference in the community by providing social, cultural, educational, professional, and recreational programs
- To foster community spirit by creating a place for family and friends to come together
With a focus on fitness and fun, Sevathon brings together hundreds of families from the community and, on the day of the event, thousands of enthusiastic participants arrive at the venue with an aim to support a Nonprofit by running in one of the races or performing Yoga. This is followed by a cultural Extravaganza and a variety of activities for people of all ages.
The 50+ participating Non-Profits showcase their cause at the booths set up in the park. With the help of a talented and experienced Sevathon leadership team, these Non-profits will be able to scale their service activities, recruit new volunteers, and learn from the experience of the other nonprofits.
Participants can register to walk or run for a cause, pledge a donation by choosing from a nonprofit that has a track record of fighting for a wide variety of local and global causes and of representing a rich array of cultures and subcultures. These organizations are led by determined and passionate people who will benefit immensely from this support.
