On April 2, the Akshaya Patra Foundation’s achievement of serving four billion meals under the PM Poshan Abhiyaan was commemorated at a special event held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations organized the event titled, “Achievements in Food Security: India’s Strides Towards Sustainable Development Goals,” to celebrate India’s progress towards achieving zero hunger, which is Sustainable Development Goal 2.

Ruchira Kamboj, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations read a letter from PM Modi in which he lauded the non-profit organization’s efforts. “As we celebrate this milestone, we must reflect on the intrinsic value that food holds in our vibrant culture. From the sacred Annaprashan ceremony marking a child’s first ‘rice meal’ to the concept of a ‘Thali’ emphasizing the importance of a balanced diet, our societal ethos creates an interplay among nutrition, diet, and diversity,” the letter read.

Other dignitaries who spoke at the event were Kailash Satyarthi, Nobel Laureate and UN SDG Advocate; N R Narayana Murthy, Chairman Emeritus, Infosys; and Madhu Pandit Dasa, Founder-Chairman of The Akshaya Patra Foundation.
