The dedication ceremony of the Dr. Thomas Abraham Library, named after the Chairman of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), took place at the Indian American Kerala Cultural and Civic Center in Elmont, New York, on April 6.
Members of the Indian diaspora attended the event, including Indian Consul General Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, who inaugurated the library. The library contains books and historical documents – many from Dr. Abraham’s personal collection – about the history of the Indian diaspora in the United States.
On the occasion, the New York City Deputy Commissioner for International Affairs Dilip Chauhan presented a proclamation from Mayor Eric Adams declaring April 6th as Dr. Thomas Abraham Day, to recognize his efforts in building community among the Indian diaspora. Apart from the GOPIO, Dr. Abraham has founded and served in multiple diaspora community groups for half a century.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Thomas thanked everyone in attendance and said, “Our community should continue to grow and become stronger in the political arena too.”
