Publisher Vandana Kumar, India Currents founder, won the inaugural Gaurai – Savitribai Phule Award for her longstanding contribution to amplifying Indian-American voices, stories, and community perspectives.
Gaurai Khela debuted in 2026 as a community celebration of Maharashtra’s culture, bringing Marathi and non-Marathi families and friends together to experience, participate in, and share its traditions, according to a press release. The event was held on Sunday, August 23 at the Downtown Event Center in Fremont, CA.
Nearly 800 people registered for the inaugural event. Throughout the day, attendees took part in interactive activities that brought Maharashtrian traditions into a shared community setting for the South Asian diaspora and residents alike.

One visual highlight of the event was an 8-foot replica of Shaniwar Wada, offering visitors a familiar symbol of Maharashtra and a setting for photos and conversations.
The Saree Mahotsav and Lavanyavati fashion showcase brought together traditional Maharashtrian clothing and contemporary styles. Participants also joined Mangalagauri games and dances, turning familiar cultural traditions into activities that people could experience together rather than simply watch.

The event also included a cultural marketplace, where vendors, artisans, creators, and local businesses offered food, products, and crafts connected to Maharashtra.
Food played a central role in the gathering. A Traditional Food Competition brought participants together around Maharashtrian recipes, while guests had the opportunity to sample a range of traditional dishes.
