Dr. Amish Shah, an emergency physician and former member of the Arizona House of Representatives, was declared the winner of the Democratic primary in Arizona’s First Congressional District. This area includes Scottsdale and parts of Phoenix.
In a statement released on July 22, Shah said he was proud of his hardworking, grassroots candidacy.
“Our victory in this primary was a grassroots victory where Arizona voters made their voices heard. Now, it’s my job to earn the support of every voter in this district—including Democrats who voted for another candidate, Independents frustrated with our political system, and Republicans disappointed with the state of the country.”
He added that the status quo in Washington, DC was not working for Arizonans.
“From rising costs to a reckless war in Iran to the largest cuts to our nation’s healthcare system in American history, corrupt and self-interested politicians in Congress are making life harder for people, not easier. We need leaders in Congress who are focused on the needs of the people they represent instead of picking partisan fights and lining their own pockets. I’ve spent my career serving the people of this district in both the ER and the State House, and I look forward to winning in November and serving them in Congress.”
Dr. Shah won three straight elections to the Arizona House of Representatives in 2018, 2020, and 2022. During five years in the legislature, he worked to raise teacher pay, support small businesses, improve public safety, and passed more bills into law than any Arizona Democrat in the past decade.
An emergency room physician, Dr. Shah has priorities that include lowering healthcare costs, taking on Big Pharma, protecting reproductive freedom, and keeping politicians out of personal medical decisions. In Congress, he says, he will fight to lower costs, protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, and put Arizona families first.
Outside of work, Amish enjoys basketball, flying small airplanes, traveling, and spending time with his three adopted cats, Hillary, Miss Meowerson, and Cousin Oliver. He speaks conversational Spanish and is fluent in Gujarati.
Dr. Shah will face Republican Jay Freely, a former NFL kicker, in the November midterms.
