Zero proof for the health-conscious

Recently, while using a Continuous Glucose Monitoring device, I found that alcohol was the worst in spiking my sugar levels. I’ve never been much of a drinker. I don’t like beer or wine. Cocktails like a piña colada or margarita (umbrella drinks as I call them) were my drinks of choice when I went out. And then earlier last year, my husband went cold turkey and stopped consuming alcohol, reflecting a broader cultural shift toward mindful consumption, while still enjoying complex, flavorful drinks. Zero-proof options provide the satisfaction of a crafted beverage without the negative effects of alcohol, aligning perfectly with his wellness trend.

As I talked about it with my friends and young adults, I realized that this isn’t just a trend; it’s a seismic shift. We’re witnessing a paradigm shift in how we approach social drinking, driven by a desire for wellness, genuine connection, and a newfound appreciation for the art of mixology itself. Gone are the days when a non-alcoholic option meant a lackluster juice blend aka mocktails. Now, innovative brands like Seedlip (fantastic spirits), Lyre’s (their sparkling wines are expensive and worth it) and Athletic Brewing (great selection of beers) are crafting complex, botanical-infused spirits that rival their alcoholic counterparts. They’re meticulously replicating the depth, aroma, and complexity of traditional liquors, empowering bartenders to create zero-proof cocktails that are as nuanced and compelling as any classic.

Embracing mindful drinking

The driving force behind this movement is multifaceted. It’s the sober-curious movement, a growing wave of individuals questioning their relationship with alcohol and embracing mindful drinking. It’s the increasing emphasis on health and wellness, a desire to savor the moment without the lingering effects of alcohol. And it’s the simple recognition that everyone deserves to enjoy a beautifully crafted beverage, regardless of their personal choices.

The mixologist from Bombay Brasserie, where Indian cuisine is presented with the elegance of French culinary artistry at the Taj Campton in San Francisco’s Union Square, shared some of their most popular zero-proof recipes with us.

Whether you’re seeking a refreshing alternative for a night out or simply exploring new flavors, these zero-proof cocktails are a delicious way to enjoy the art of mixology—without the buzz.
