In 2006, a small group of first-generation Chinese immigrants—some fleeing religious
persecution— came together in upstate New York with a shared dream: to revive the traditional arts and culture that were being decimated in China. By year’s end, they crafted the first performance—Shen Yun.

In under twenty years, Shen Yun has grown from humble beginnings to global renown,
performing on five continents and across 200 cities every year. Today, Shen Yun stands as a global cultural phenomenon, celebrating two decades of beauty, faith, courage, and inspiration.

However, this American success story does not come without price. Shen Yun was founded by practitioners of Falun Gong, a Buddhist spiritual practice brutally suppressed by the Chinese regime. Though they fled China in search of freedom, one danger they could not anticipate awaited them. In reality, persecution pursued them all the way to America.

Over two decades, they experienced intrusions by Chinese spies at their headquarters, burglaries at their homes, sabotage of their buses, cyberattacks on their websites, and pressure from Chinese embassies urging governments and theaters to cancel Shen Yun’s performances and smear campaigns across American media platforms.

Today, persecution has been escalated with a series of lawsuits and death threats against Shen Yun artists that aim to discredit and destroy Shen Yun.

Despite transnational persecution by the Chinese regime, Shen Yun stays true to its vision and mission and continues to thrive. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from audiences is testimony to its impact and can be viewed here.

Shen Yun is not just a dance performance. It’s what you’ve been waiting for. It truly matters for each and every one of us. It’s once-in-a-lifetime experience. Come to see it and to find out for yourself.
