The San Francisco International Arts Festival (SFIAF) will present a diverse lineup of South Asian and cross-cultural performances from April 30 to May 11, 2025. The festival, taking place in the Mission District, will feature six full-length dance and music concerts showcasing eight South Asian artists and ensembles.
The performances will explore themes of nature, womanhood, and cross-cultural dialogue, reflecting the festival’s ongoing theme “IN DIASPORA: I.D. for the New Majority.” This theme invites artists to consider the changing demographics of the United States and the experiences of minority, migrant, and displaced communities globally.
“For 10 years we have endeavored to present Indian classical dance with a focus on artists’ work that takes traditional forms to highlight contemporary socio-political issues,” said Festival Director Andrew Wood. He also emphasized the festival’s growing interest in South Asian music, noting the vibrant South Asian artist community in the Peninsula and the Mission’s accessibility.
Dance highlights include “Prakriti” by InSyncKathak Dancers, a performance exploring human resilience through Kathak dance, and “Unbound” by Abhinaya Dance Company of San Jose, a Bharatanatyam solo exploring women’s experiences within societal constraints. Samudra Dance Creations will present “Fearless Women,” a work-in-progress exploring the stories of early Indian women writers, while Sarada Kala Nilayam will stage a piece depicting a woman’s struggle with undiagnosed pain and self-doubt.
Musical performances include a fusion of Carnatic and jazz by the Prasant Radhakrishnan Trio, a showcase of Afghan musical heritage by Eman Hashemi and Siddique Ahmed, and the world premiere of “Mystic Harmonies” by the Ali Akbar College of Music Ensemble. This collaborative performance will feature Chinese and Indian-trained musicians, including tabla virtuoso Swapan Chaudhuri. The festival will also feature a shoegaze-inspired free jazz experiment, “Jupiter,” by Sameer Gupta.
The SFIAF will present a total of 100 concerts and performances across nearly 20 venues in the Mission District. The multidisciplinary event will also include educational and outreach activities offering opportunities for artists and the public to connect.
