What challenges does Burlingame face?

Burlingame faces several significant challenges that impact its residents and the overall quality of life in the city:

Traffic Congestion: One of the most pressing issues is traffic congestion, particularly at the railroad crossing on Broadway, which serves as a major gateway to the city. This area experiences high vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic, leading to safety concerns and delays. The increasing number of trains, projected to double by 2040, exacerbates this issue, making it a top priority for city officials to address through initiatives like grade separation projects to improve safety and reduce congestion.

Public Safety and Crime: There has been an uptick in crime in Burlingame, raising concerns among residents. While specific incidents may be low, perceptions of safety can significantly affect community well-being. The city is working on strategies to enhance police presence in key areas and improve community engagement to address these concerns effectively

Housing Affordability: Despite being a desirable location, Burlingame’s housing market has become increasingly expensive, making it difficult for many residents to find reasonably priced homes. This situation is compounded by a trend of properties being purchased and rebuilt at premium prices, which can lead to a lack of affordable options for families and individuals looking to settle in the District 2.

Sustainable Development: As Burlingame continues to grow, balancing development with sustainability is crucial. The city aims to promote sustainable practices while preserving its character and green spaces. This includes implementing measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and engaging the community in climate action initiatives

Economic Opportunities: Supporting local businesses while attracting new economic opportunities remains a challenge. The city must find ways to revitalize commercial areas like the Broadway shopping district while maintaining its small-town charm.

Addressing these challenges will require collaborative efforts from city officials, community members, and stakeholders to ensure a thriving future for Burlingame.

For over 20 years, My husband and I had the privilege of raising our three children here, all of whom have attended our public schools.

Comprehensive Community Engagement: My extensive experience spans multiple facets of community development. I have served on the Burlingame City Planning Commission, chaired school advisory committees, organized emergency preparedness initiatives, and led community service projects through organizations like the Burlingame Lions Club.

Inclusive Leadership: I am deeply committed to ensuring that every resident feels valued and heard. My work with the Commission on the Status of Women, where I championed women’s empowerment, highlights my dedication to promoting equitable representation and participation within the city council.

Mental Health Support: I aim to implement intergenerational platforms that address mental health concerns among seniors and youth, demonstrating a holistic approach to community welfare. Youth can share the technology skills with the seniors and they in-return share their life lessons with youth.  Programs like these will combat loneliness and mental health issues.

Local Business Support: I support local businesses while attracting new economic opportunities, which is crucial for maintaining our city’s character and vitality.

“My vision for Burlingame is one of inclusive growth, where every resident feels valued and heard, ” adds Bandrapalli.
