Naatak’s The MouseTrap: A walk down memory lane
As I settled into the cozy confines of the Starbright Theater in Campbell, CA, last December, memories of my childhood flooded back – a time when Agatha Christie’s tales of mystery and puzzle-solving captivated my imagination. Little did I know that the Naatak’s rendition of Agatha Christie’s The MouseTrap, directed and produced by the talented Manish Sabu and Alka Sippy, would not only bring those cherished memories to life, but also offer a uniquely immersive experience.
A riveting whodunit unfolds on stage

The setting, a cabin in the midst of a cold, snowy day, served as the perfect backdrop for the chilly tale unfolding on stage. The story begins with a couple, portrayed by Richa Pareek and Vikram Ramanarayan, eagerly awaiting the arrival of four guests at their small guest house over the weekend. As they listen to a radio report about a local murder, tensions rise, setting the stage for a night of suspense. The plot takes an unexpected turn when a fifth guest, played by director Manish Sabu, arrives after his car overturns in a snowdrift. His character becomes the most interesting and suspicious of all, adding a layer of complexity to the unfolding mystery.
The intrigue deepens when a police officer, played by Aditya Mahajan, arrives at the cabin and assembles everyone for questioning. Then another a murder occurs. Who will be the next victim? Will the murderer be unmasked in time to prevent more deaths?
A thrilling take on a timeless classic

The brilliance of Agatha Christie’s original work came to life on stage thanks to the director’s vision and his dedicated, on-point volunteer actors. The cast, which also included Yash Desai, Vinata Karra, Shashank Divekar, Shloka Kini, embodied their characters with finesse, making it impossible to discern the true culprit in this classic murder mystery.
What made this production noteworthy was the gradual reveal of each character’s background, intertwining their stories in an unpredictable and riveting manner. This is no mean feat, given that another stage adaptation of The Mousetrap is the world’s longest-running play, running at London’s West End since 1952.
Naatak’s production not only paid homage to Agatha Christie’s timeless brilliance but also provided a fresh and engaging take on a classic. It masterfully captured the essence of Christie’s storytelling, delivering a suspenseful and thrilling experience. As a member of the audience, I felt like an active participant as the mystery unraveled on stage.
