In “Carrie’s Web” the fantastical world intersects with reality in a fun filled, theater and dance solo performance. “Carrie’s Web” is created and performed by Shyamala Moorty of the Post Natyam Collective with dramaturgy, and directed by acclaimed performer and comic D’lo.
Carrie, a high heel-loving spider is spinning out new moves when she inadvertently snares a young South Asian woman, Artesia, who’s dealing with a terrible family secret. As Artesia struggles to untangle herself from cultural and familial webs, she looks for empowerment to stop the cycle of violence. The many twists and turns of the parallel lives of Carrie and Artesia are woven together with contemporary Indian dance, theater, and video.
Moorty incorporates a contemporary blend of modern and post-modern dance and bharatanatyam. Her previous work, “RISE,” was acclaimed as a “tour de force” by the Los Angeles Times in 2004.
“Carrie’s Web” was created in a unique process for TeAda Productions’ Healing Aloud Series. Moorty is one of four artists commissioned for the series to create new performance in collaboration with a related immigrant health organization and their constituents. The performance was made in partnership with Niswa, an organization that preserves and strengthens Muslim women and families through heath education, counseling, referral, crisis intervention and shelter.
