Starting May 28, the film Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, based on the life of Indian freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar will be available to stream on ZEE5 Global. The day also marks Savarkar’s 141st birth anniversary. This will be the film’s digital premiere and viewers can watch it in Hindi and Marathi.

Savarkar was an Indian freedom fighter who fought against the British and spent over ten years in Cellular Jail in Port Blair, Andaman, which was one of the harshest prisons of the time. He passed away in 1966, and has since become a controversial figure in Indian history, as well as its present-day politics. Savarkar is also credited with being one of the first to conceive of the ideas of Hindutva and Akhand Bharat.

Director Randeep Hooda plays the lead role in the film, with Ankita Lokhande playing his wife Yamunabai Savarkar. “I must admit that I learned a lot more about this inspiring hero after I started working on this project,” said Hooda. “I want to share this film with as many people as possible to counter the false narrative spread in popular culture to bury his legacy.”
The film will be available to stream on ZEE5 Global on May 28.
