India Currents’ writers had an outstanding night at the 46th Annual Journalism Awards Gala held by the San Francisco Press Club on December 13, with a haul of ten awards for journalistic excellence.
Our staff photographer and Catchlight Fellow Sree Sripathy took First Place in the Digital Media: Photography/Feature category for her story, “Abhinaya Dance Company Tackles Wildfire”.
Meera Kymal and Anjana Nagarajan-Butaney won a Third Place journalistic excellence award for their op-ed, “Haunted By A Conversation With A Domestic Violence Survivor,” as did Poorvi Sarkar for her story “Stop Writing Brown Characters for White Audiences,” in the Digital Media category for Commentary.
Meera and Anjana also won an Honorable Mention in the Digital Media: Investigative Reporting category for their story on aging, ” Why Is It So Challenging For Sabbar Khalil To Age In Place.”
In the Digital Media: Columns-News/Political category, Avatans Kumar, Shabnam Arora Afsah, and Ritu Marwah won Third Place for their coverage of minority voters and the Democratic party. Ritu Marwah also won an Honorable Mention for her story, “Desi Cowboy Winemakers Make Som Ras In Paso Robles,” in the Digital Media: Columns-Features category.
The San Francisco Press Club Awards Gala honoring Bay Area journalists was hosted at the Francisco Elks Lodge #3. The Press Club selected 291 winners out of a record-breaking 550 entries.
