On Wednesday, December 13, two intruders breached Parliament security to disrupt proceedings in the Lok Sabha. They shouted slogans and set off canisters of colored smoke before they were apprehended. No one was injured and the intruders’ motives are still unknown.

The two intruders and two more accomplices who were shouting slogans outside the Parliament building have been arrested by police. They are reported to be from different states in India. There are also reports of authorities arresting two other accomplices.

Wednesday was also the 22nd anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attacks, when gunmen opened fire in the Parliament complex and killed nine people. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Draupadi Murmu and other leaders paid tribute to the victims of the 2001 attack.

Reports suggest that the intruders were able to enter the Parliament complex because of visitor passes issued by BJP MP Pratap Simha from the Mysore-Kodagu constituency in Karnataka.
