I’m Vandana Kumar, publisher of India Currents. I know you get a lot of emails asking for your year-end contribution. There are so many worthy organizations that could use your help. But I wanted to take this opportunity to share why we’re different, and why we need your support now more than ever.
We were founded in 1987 with the mission of filling the void of news about our community. Through the years, India Currents has chronicled the growth of the Indian American community, its triumphs, its tragedies, its luminaries, and those left behind.
We do this every day through stories like our currently-running series on aging, which focuses on the challenges most Indian Americans face: how to successfully care for our parents, with little to no culturally appropriate support.
This is reporting you won’t find anywhere else (certainly not in the national news!) It is nuanced reporting: our writers face those very challenges themselves, and deeply understand their complexities.
