SUMMARY:Nursing Services – What you ought to know
DESCRIPTION:Nursing services are crucial to our community but often go unnoticed. For the first time\, CWC is addressing this vital need\, particularly focusing on the elderly population. The upcoming webinar will highlight the significant role of nurses in health monitoring\, chronic disease management\, and supportive care. It will also emphasize the importance of education and self-advocacy\, aiming to equip the elderly with the knowledge and tools to navigate their healthcare journey effectively.\nThis comprehensive approach ensures that the elderly receive attentive and personalized care\, thereby fostering a healthier community. Key takeaways from the webinar include understanding the importance of early healthcare recognition\, adopting healthy living practices\, advocating for oneself in healthcare settings\, and preventing infections within senior community environments.\nWe are honored to have two esteemed speakers\, Dr Veena Vangari and Dr Sejal Naik\, from the Bay Area Indian Nurses Association (BAINA). SUMMARY:The Art of Cosmopolitanism in Premodern Kerala
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to have Dr. Arati Menon present on a topic that previously has not been explored by SAAC – the art and architecture of Kerala. \nSince antiquity\, Kerala on the Malabar Coast of southwestern India has served as a beacon for merchant ships. This talk examines architectural and sculptural similitude in Kerala’s premodern churches\, mosques\, synagogues\, and temples\, the agency of local artisans\, and the roles played by rulers\, merchants\, and religious leaders to present a history of art and cosmopolitanism on the Malabar Coast \nLook forward to seeing you virtually at the event. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Poetry of Diaspora in Silicon Valley
DESCRIPTION:All poetry lovers are invited to enjoy an online poetry offering by Poetry of Diaspora in Silicon Valley. Attendees are invited to bring their poems to read in the open mic that follows the first hour of poetry offered by nine poets. \nLast summer India Currents in collaboration with Poetry of Diaspora in Silicon Valley\, offered an online poetry show to raise poetic voices of diaspora in the ‘Stop the Hate’ campaign. The program was called Navarasa\, for the nine rasas (juices/emotions) described in Indian classical arts texts. The Poetry of Diaspora in Silicon Valley group nurtures poetic voices in the community to share the joy of oral poetic traditions\, from all parts of the world. We gather to read poems to each other\, with an occasional performance for the community. \n  \nRVSP by sending an email to jyoti_BR@hotmail.com \n\n\n	Related

Last time we focused on a male dominated story by a male author. During that process\, many male characters became girls or were embodied by female actors.  This reimagination can be similar\, instead of an all girls school\, maybe it’s a boarding school. The possibilities are endless for our student populous! \nThe conservatory will run from February 26 to May 30\, 2024\, followed by production which will end with the final performance in December 2024. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Decadence and Decay: Fashioning the Image of Lady Mary Curzon\, Vicereine of India
DESCRIPTION:A headless mannequin placed within a glass box wears a legendary ball gown commissioned in 1902 by the Vicereine of India\, Mary Curzon. The dress – commissioned for a state ball in Delhi – was as symbolic as it was magnificent\, featuring peacock feathers embroidered in gold\, silver\, and copper threads. Worn on the statuesque body of the Vicereine\, the gown transformed her into “a vision of embodied light” that revealed the opulence of the British Raj rather than the ways in which it was falling apart at the seams. Its display also attempts to highlight the glamour and glory of Empire though it\, too\, is clearly in a state of dramatic and irreversible deterioration. This presentation examines how imperial authority and the subjugation of the Indian Subcontinent were staged on the body of Lady Curzon through dress and ornament\, veiling the steady decline of British rule as well as Curzon’s own failing health. We consider how dress can simultaneously reveal an individual’s authentic self while also laying bare their deepest insecurities\, and explore the tensions between the natural process of decay and our often unnatural efforts to prevent it. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Beyond the Sharp Edge: Iconography of Indic Arms
DESCRIPTION:Indian arms and armor are frequently adorned with auspicious and sacred imagery to induce shakti (divine power) to enter them\, thus transforming functional objects into implements that hold within them the quality of numen—magical or divine power. This presentation will survey the varieties of Hindu sacred images—goddesses\, gods\, demi-gods\, mythological beasts—that adorn arms and armor of the Indian subcontinent\, and explore the underlying reasons why these specific images may have been chosen among the vast pantheon of Indian sacred imagery. \nPlease join us for a presentation by Ravinder Reddy on October 21 where he will discuss the varieties of Hindu sacred images that adorn arms and armor of the Indian subcontinent. \nRegistration in advance is required for this event. SUMMARY:India’s Democratic Longevity and its Hugely Troubled Trajectory
DESCRIPTION:India celebrated 75 years of its independence last year with a lot of enthusiasm.\nCelebrations did not hide the fact it is also one of the leading countries which is passing through what is popularly known as ‘democratic backsliding’. \nA country which\, like many others\, is using democratic processes to secure undemocratic outcomes\, where freely contested elections are being deployed for the purpose of expressing\, cultivating\, or enhancing majoritarian prejudices—to target minorities and turn them into lesser citizens. \nIn this scenario\, there is an urgent need to unpack this journey of democratic India further \, there is a need to make a distinction between India as an electoral democracy and India as a liberal democracy. \n\n\nBackground Reading for the talk:\n\nHow India’s Ruling Party Erodes Democracy by Ashutosh Varshney\nJournal of Democracy\, Volume 33\, Number 4\, October 2022\, pp. 104-118  (Article) \n\n\n\nSpeaker: \nProf Ashutosh Varshney is Sol Goldman Professor of International Studies and the Social Sciences and Professor of Political Science at Brown University\, where he also directs the Center for Contemporary South Asia. Previously\, he taught at Harvard (1989-98) and the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor (2001-2008). \nHis books include Battles Half Won: India’s Improbable Democracy (2013)\, Collective Violence in Indonesia (2009)\, Ethnic Conflict and Civic Life: Hindus and Muslims in India (Yale 2002)\, India in the Era of Economic Reforms (1999)\, and Democracy\, Development and the Countryside: Urban-Rural Struggles in India (Cambridge 1995). \n\n\n\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:GODS IN LIVING COLOR: 19TH-CENTURY DEVOTIONAL LITHOGRAPHS FROM CALCUTTA
DESCRIPTION:For over two thousand years\, artists in the Indian Subcontinent have depicted Hindu deities through a wide range of media\, frequently innovating when new techniques and materials became available or in response to social or religious changes. One such moment occurred during the 19th century in the city of Calcutta (now Kolkata)\, when new technologies of reproduction and systems of representation brought by the British Raj—and its allied systems of commerce and culture—opened up new representational possibilities. This lecture will address what happened when lithography and other depictive tools entered a local visual ecosystem already rich with indigenous forms of painted and printed devotional imagery. The new forms of sacred and mythological imagery that Bengali artists created during this moment of transformation were\, until recently\, mostly excluded from the art historical canon. Celebrating and exploring them not only broadens our view of the history of Indian art and religion but also helps us to understand the ever-expanding universe of sacred images that we see in home\, shop and office shrines around the globe today. \n  \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. Space is limited. \nSave my spot! \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:TAMIL YOGINIS: GODDESSES OF MULTIPLICITY
DESCRIPTION:Among the sculptures visitors encounter in the Detroit Institute of Arts’ gallery of Indian and Southeast Asian art is a life-sized yogini goddess from southern India\, carved from stone sometime between the late ninth and mid-tenth century. Embodying both attractive and threatening characteristics\, she projects an unmistakable power. In the temple for which she was made\, which no longer survives\, this power would have been amplified by potentially dozens of other such goddesses enshrined alongside her\, many of which are now housed in museums throughout North America\, Europe\, and India. This presentation will explore the changing contexts to which the DIA yogini and her companions have belonged\, from the temple that once enshrined them\, to multiple later shrines\, to the museums that house many of them today. \nWe are excited to begin the new year with a presentation by Dr. Kasdorf of the Detroit Institute of Arts on the topic of Yoginis – female master practitioners of tantra and yoga\, as well as the sacred feminine force made incarnate\, as an aspect of Parvati\, and revered in the yogini temples of India. This presentation will focus on the latter aspect of Yoginis. \nLook forward to seeing you virtually at the event. \nWarm Wishes. \nJai Varadaraj \nChair SAAC@SDMA \nRegistration in advance is required for this event.
