SUMMARY:OPERA SAN JOSÉ PRESENTS LA TRAVIATA
DESCRIPTION:SAN JOSÉ\, CA (19 March 2026) — Opera San José closes its 2025-26 season devoted to exploring\nthe question of “What is love?” with the quintessential operatic story of all-encompassing passion and\nprofound loss. Offering one of opera’s most enduring love stories\, Verdi’s La Traviata follows the\nglamorous courtesan Violetta as she falls deeply in love with Alfredo—for whom she sacrifices all.\nThis newly envisioned production by director Tara Branham heightens the opera’s social critique\,\nemphasizing the transactional nature of the world Violetta inhabits\, where elegant women are\nbartered as commodities. Set in the fashionable salons of Paris’ demimonde\, this production delves\ninto the heart of glittering 1888 French society and an unacceptable affair that costs the heroine\neverything. Filled with iconic melodies\, breathtaking duets\, and high-stakes drama\, La Traviata has\nenthralled audiences with its emotional depth and stunning music since its premiere 173 years ago.\nFormer Artist-in-Residence Johannes Löhner makes his OSJ principal conducting debut\, while\nOSJ’s Inaugural Artist-in-Residence Director Tara Branham helms this production\, that will include\nthe sweeping grandeur of the era\, with added elements such as Kathak-inspired South Asian\nchoreography in Flora’s lavish Act II party. La Traviata will be performed in Italian with English and\nSpanish supertitles\, April 19 – May 3\, 2026 (performance dates/times below) at the California\nTheatre\, 345 South First Street\, San José. For more information or to purchase tickets ($58–$215\,\nplus $3.50 fee per ticket)\, the public may visit operasj.org or call 408-437-4450 (open Monday\nthrough Friday\, 11:00am–5:30pm).\nSaid Opera San José General Director & CEO Shawna Lucey\, “Verdi’s thrilling masterpiece invites\nus into Violetta’s world—one of intoxicating love\, profound courage\, and devastating sacrifice. It is\ndeeply intimate yet fills the theater with huge emotion and unforgettable music.” Lucey added\,\n“Bringing La Traviata to life at the elegant California Theatre allows us to end this season on a high\nnote of both grandeur and romanticism. We look forward to welcoming audiences for a closing\nproduction that is as emotionally shattering as it is magnificent.”\nLa Traviata will star soprano Mikaya Sager\, who captivated audiences as Nedda in OSJ’s Pagliacci\,\nas the glamorous\, witty\, and fiercely independent courtesan Violetta. She will be joined by former\nOSJ Artist-in-Residence tenor WooYoung Yoon as Alfredo\, her young lover\, following his\nacclaimed 2024 performances as Rodolfo in La Bohème and Tamino in The Magic Flute with OSJ.\nBaritone Kidon Choi\, who impressed audiences as Alfio and Tonio in OSJ’s Cavalleria Rusticana\nand Pagliacci\, will take on the role of Alfredo’s dignified and traditional father\, Germont. OSJ Artist-\nin-Residence mezzo-soprano Joanne Evans will portray Violetta’s friend and fellow courtesan Flora\,\nwhile OSJ Artist-in-Residence soprano Nicole Koh will play Annina\, Violetta’s devoted maid and\nconfidante. Tenor Benjamin Ruiz will appear as the lively young nobleman Gastone (and Alfredo on\nMarch 3)\, and baritone Robert Balonek will portray Baron Douphol\, the wealthy and possessive\nsuitor who vies for Violetta’s attention. The calm and compassionate Doctor Grenvil will be played\nby baritone Joseph Calzada. Rounding out the cast\, baritone Michael Jesse Kuo will take on the\nrole of Marquis d’Obigny\, a member of Violetta’s Parisian social circle\, and tenor Nicolas Vasquez-\nGerst will appear as Violetta’s attendant Giuseppe (and Gastone on March 3).\nThe chorus ensemble is comprised of Chris Abadia\, Rachel Beninghof\, Aro Cherry\, Ethan Chu\,\nGabe Frank\, Nicolas Vasquez-Gerst\, Danielle Imai\, Hana Jung\, Brennah Kemmerly\, Anicia\nMadali\, Victoria McDowell\, Pravesh Mehra\, Eric Mellum\, Nicholas Molle\, Fallon Nunes\,\nJoshua Porter\, and Luis Tuyub. The dancers and supernumeraries include Suhani Arora\, Antara\nBhardwaj\, Jim Ballard\, Alaniz Barnill\, Tracy Fuller\, Laiy Joshi\, Kaya Kaya\, and Larry Kern.\nThe creative team for La Traviata includes Tara Branham (Director)\, Johannes Löhner\n(Conductor)\, Noah Lindquist (Assistant Conductor & Chorus Master)\, Mark Anthony Vallejo\n(Assistant Director)\, Eric Flatmo (original Set Designer)\, Mitchell Ost (Lighting Designer)\,\nChristina Martin (Hair and Makeup)\, Betty Poindexter (original Costume Designer)\, Antara\nBhardwaj (Choreographer) and Dave Maier (Fight Choreographer).\nLa Traviata\, composed by Giuseppe Verdi\, with libretto by Francesco Maria Piave based on\nAlexandre Dumas fils’ novel La Dame aux Camélias\, premiered on March 6\, 1853\, at Venice’s\nTeatro La Fenice. Initially greeted with mixed reactions due to its contemporary setting and\nunconventional heroine\, over time it became one of Verdi’s most beloved works. Filled with\nmemorable arias\, emotional duets\, and dramatic tension\, the opera continues to captivate audiences\nworldwide and remains a staple of the operatic repertoire.

SUMMARY:April 2026 Baithak: Hinduism Today- Where Do We Go From Here?
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nNamaste\, \nYou are invited to join Hindus for Human Rights on Saturday\, April 18 at 12 PM ET / 9 AM PT for our baithak of the month. \n  \nThis time\, we’ll be in conversation with Rajmohan Gandhi on his new book\, Do You Know Your Hinduism? Notes for Modern-Day Hindus (Aleph Book Company\, 2026)\, moderated by our own Sunita Viswanath. \n  \nWhat it means to be Hindu today-and what Hinduism asks of us in a world shaped by rancor and resentment- remains an urgent question. This baithak approaches Hinduism not as a fixed identity\, but as an evolving ethical and spiritual tradition. At a time when religion is often mobilized in the service of power\, we will ask how Hinduism might still speak meaningfully to contemporary concerns: war\, nationalism\, justice\, and coexistence. \n  \nTogether\, we’ll explore Hinduism not simply as inheritance\, but as something to be consciously interpreted and lived- drawing on its resources to confront violence and inequality\, while also asking where it must be questioned or reimagined. \n  \nJoin us for a conversation that brings together reflection\, critique\, and dialogue to ask: Where do we go from here? \n  \nOur Guest-  \n  \nRajmohanji is a distinguished historian\, biographer\, and public intellectual whose work engages deeply with questions of democracy\, nonviolence\, and interfaith understanding. A former member of the Rajya Sabha\, he has taught politics and history at institutions including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, IIT-Gandhinagar\, IIT-Bombay\, and Michigan State University.  \nThe grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and C. Rajagopalachari\, his writing reflects a lifelong engagement with the ethical and political challenges of modern India. He is the author of several acclaimed works\, including biographies of Gandhi\, Sardar Patel\, and Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan. He is an HfHR advisory board member.  \n  \nAbout the series: \n  \nBaithaks for Liberation is a virtual conversation series hosted by HfHR\, providing a space for critical discussions and exploration of what it would mean to construct a truly liberatory and justice-oriented Hinduism. This series will bring together scholars\, practitioners\, and activists to explore how Hindu traditions and teachings can offer insights on pressing issues\, including caste abolition\, queer and feminist liberation\, racial justice\, and more. \n  \nReserve your spot now to engage with these leading voices and be a part of this vital conversation! Click below to register for this powerful session on Zoom: \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nAnd if you haven’t already\, please do consider becoming an official member of Hindus for Human Rights! In addition to helping us grow a movement of progressive Hindus challenging caste and Hindutva in the diaspora\, HfHR members also receive a number of special members-only perks\, including our Liberation Theology Working Group’s “Chhota Baithak” series of discussion calls\, held one week after each month’s baithak webinar as a space for members to gather virtually and discuss the topics covered in the baithak! \n  \nIf you sign up today\, you will be in the running to win a free copy of Anantji’s book!

SUMMARY:A Conversation between Historians on Partition and Memory
DESCRIPTION:Event Details \nJoin historian Madihah Akhter for an engaging dialogue with Executive Director Anna Toledano on the power of oral history. Together\, they will explore personal stories within the 10\,000 Memories exhibition and discuss how we preserve lived experiences for future generations. \nAbout the Program\nIn this conversation-style program\, Dr. Akhter takes us behind-the-scenes of how historians collect\, record\, and interpret the memories of those who lived through South Asia’s independence and displacement. She and Dr. Toledano will discuss the delicate process of capturing memories decades after the fact and the profound role these personal voices play in shaping the South Asian diaspora today. Whether you have family roots in the Partition Archive or are discovering this history for the first time\, join us to explore how individual voices help us navigate one of the most significant events of the 20th century. \nMadihah Akhter received her PhD in History from Stanford University and has over 15 years of experience teaching modern South Asian history. Her work emphasizes multiple perspectives on Partition—from personal stories to political contexts—and has been supported by a Fulbright Doctoral Fellowship. \nAnna Toledano holds a PhD in the History of Science from Stanford\, an MA in Museum Anthropology from Columbia\, and an AB in History of Science from Princeton.

SUMMARY:Kabir: Music of Oneness
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening where timeless poetry meets contemporary sound in a deeply moving musical tribute inspired by the words of Kabir. \nA 15th-century mystic\, poet\, and reformer\, Kabir is one of the most influential voices in Indian spiritual and literary history. Writing in simple yet profound couplets known as dohas\, he spoke directly to the human experience — questioning rigid religious boundaries\, rejecting divisions of caste and creed\, and emphasizing a universal truth rooted in love\, humility\, and inner reflection. Influenced by both Bhakti and Sufi traditions\, Kabir’s poetry transcends time\, culture\, and faith\, with verses that continue to be sung\, studied\, and revered across generations\, including in the Sikh scripture\, the Guru Granth Sahib. \nOn Sunday\, March 29 at 5PM at Zilkha Hall\, The Hobby Center\, the Anirudh Varma Collective brings this legacy to life\, blending modern instrumentation with classical Indian motifs to create innovative arrangements that reflect Kabir’s enduring message of unity and oneness. \nThey are joined by acclaimed vocalist Bhuvanesh Komkali\, whose rich lineage in Indian classical music — as the grandson of the legendary Kumar Gandharva — and deeply expressive vocal style bring emotional depth and authenticity to Kabir’s poetry. Also featuring Kavish Seth\, poet\, singer\, and songwriter\, and creator of the 18-string Noori instrument\, whose work represents a fresh and evolving voice in contemporary Indian music. \nTogether\, these artists present a transcendent performance that honors tradition while embracing creative evolution — a musical experience rooted in reflection\, connection\, and celebration.
