SUMMARY:CAAMFest 2026 Spotlights Independent Filmmaking and Unexpected Stories From Asian America
DESCRIPTION:  \nSAN FRANCISCO\, April 2\, 2026 — CAAMFest is returning for its 44th year\, May 7-10\, 2026\, featuring over 60 films that capture the current zeitgeist of Asian American communities. The festival’s completely in-person screenings\, panel discussions\, and other programs will be centered around the AMC Kabuki in San Francisco Japantown\, highlighting the city’s long history as a hub for Asian American community building with national impact.  \n“After 2025\, a year of historic challenges and change for the media\, 2026 is shaping up as a time of renewed vigor for Asian American independent storytellers\,” says CAAM Executive Director Donald Young. “The energy of the future is palpable. CAAMFest 2026 in many ways returns us to our roots\, with an ethos that is scrappy\, inspired\, and full of attitude.” \nThis year’s festival also includes five World Premiere films and an increased focus on showcasing documentaries funded or produced by the San Francisco-based Center for Asian American Media (CAAM)\, which produces CAAMFest. Opening Night will begin at the AMC Kabuki Theater with an advance screening of the documentary feature The A-List: 15 Stories from Asian and Pacific Diasporas. Following the film\, CAAM will host a Gala at the Asian Art Museum featuring tastes of the most talked about Asian American food and beverages in the Bay Area.  \nAlong with the film screenings\, CAAMFest also includes the Filmmaker Summit and Industry Hub\, a free event attracting filmmakers from around the nation to discuss the topics facing independent creatives who are focused on undertold stories.  \n“CAAM doesn’t just showcase Asian American stories\, we also play an integral role in the pipeline of unique stories that reflect the experiences of our communities\,” says CAAM Talent Development and Special Projects Director Sapana Sakya. “We’re proud to screen 19 CAAM supported documentaries in this year’s festival.” \nAcross the over 60 films that will be shown at this year’s festival\, thematic throughlines are emerging. \n“Each feature film that we programmed included characters that were morally conflicted\, went against the grain\, and shook the status quo\,” says CAAMFest Program Manager Dino-Ray Ramos. “The stories featured flawed people that defied the model minority myth and subverted stereotypical ‘good Asian’ behavior. Along with similarly themed and defiant documentaries\, we were subconsciously building a program of bad Asians causing good trouble.”

Told in four movements\, this piece follows the journey of an Indian woman – her youthful dreams\, the weight of societal expectations\, the strength to overcome adversity\, and the hope that emerges through faith and sisterhood. RISE is a tribute to the generations of grandmothers\, aunties\, and mothers whose unwavering determination and boundless generosity have paved the way for the women of today. More than a performance\, RISE is a celebration of courage\, transformation\, and the unbreakable bond that unites us all. \n\nThe Sa Dance Company [Sa]\, founded by Payal Kadakia\, is a trailblazer in contemporary Indian dance\, redefining tradition through a distinctly Indian-American lens. Comprised of an all-female ensemble of 10 dancers\, Sa blends classical and contemporary influences to craft a powerful new folk form that honors heritage while embracing modern narratives. With themes of womanhood\, community\, and resilience\, Sa’s performances transcend cultural boundaries\, immersing audiences in the universal language of dance. Sa has captivated audiences nationwide solidifying its place as a cultural force within the South Asian and performing arts communities.

SUMMARY:Borders\, Belonging\, and What We Leave Out: Teaching Partition
DESCRIPTION:In most U.S. classrooms\, South Asia gets covered superficially through religion and Gandhi. Two hundred years of British colonial rule and extraction? Maybe a paragraph. Millions of South Asian soldiers in both World Wars? Not mentioned. Partition\, over 15 million displaced\, communal violence\, 1-2 million dead? A paragraph\, if that. The connections to contemporary politics\, nationalism\, and division? Never made. This workshop fills that gap. We trace the full arc – from British divide-and-rule policies through hastily drawn borders that split communities overnight\, to what came after and continues to shape modern South Asia today. And through it all\, the continued resilience of the people. This workshop opens up essential conversations about empire\, borders\, resistance\, identity and belonging\, shared trauma\, the power of oral histories\, and why this matters now.\n \nThis workshop is open to everyone. Educators will also walk away with a resource guide of readings\, videos\, and book recommendations for K-12 classrooms.\n\nPresenter Antika Singh\, MSEd\n\nSponsored by Dr. Noreen Naseem Rodríguez\, Department of Teacher Education\, Michigan State University\n \n\nPD Certificate will be provided by NJEA

SUMMARY:Inclusive Hindu Weddings Course Sign-Up
DESCRIPTION:Hindu wedding ceremonies are often beautiful\, extensive affairs where couples and their families pledge their commitment to each other. They are performed in diverse ways across South Asian communities\, with joyful rituals such as the jeelakarra bellam ceremony in Andhra Pradesh and the baraat in North India. \nHowever\, Hindu wedding ceremonies also include rituals rooted in patriarchy and casteism. Traditional Hindu wedding formulas often fail to meet the needs of Hindus entering interfaith marriages\, inter-caste marriages\, and queer marriages. The lack of knowledge in Hindu communities about how to conduct a complex ritual such as a wedding\, let alone re-imagine it in a way that promotes inclusion and social justice\, is a significant barrier to Hindus having weddings that reflect their faith and personal values. \nInclusive Hindu Weddings\, taught by Hindu pandita and scholar Sapna Pandya\, is a three-part introductory workshop on conducting inclusive Hindu weddings. The class is part of HfHR’s new Samadarshini Project\, which brings Hindu pandits\, theologians\, and practitioners together to re-imagine Hindu rituals and philosophies in ways that promote collective liberation. \nThe first class will start with an overview of the purpose of marriage in Hinduism and the principles behind Hindu wedding rituals. The second and third classes will take us through the main “beats” of Hindu weddings: invocations; commitment rituals; and community acknowledgements. This class will highlight regional and caste differences in ritual practices and identify ways to change rituals to make them gender inclusive\, anti-caste\, and friendly toward same-sex and interfaith contexts. \nClasses are one hour long and will take place every other Sunday from May 3rd-May 31st. To join this class\, you must become a member of Hindus for Human Rights. If you do not wish to become a member\, you can sign up for the class by paying a course fee of $100. \nClass One: Sunday\, May 3rd from 9 AM PT/12 PM ET \nClass Two: Sunday\, May 17th from 9 AM PT/12 PM ET \nClass Three: Sunday\, May 31st from 9 AM PT/12 PM ET

SUMMARY:Double Diaspora: Indo-Caribbeans Past and Present
DESCRIPTION:This session provides a basic overview of Indo-Caribbean history and culture\, specifically geared towards K-12 teachers. The goal is to provide classroom teachers with an understanding of this unique cultural group as well as to open up possible curricular points of entry for teachers so that students can see representation of Indo-Caribbean stories in their curriculum.\nIndo-Caribbean people are descendants of the laborers from the Indian subcontinent who were brought to the Caribbean as indentured servants during the colonial era. They are people of a double diaspora as many of them have now moved out of the Caribbean into other areas like Canada\, the US\, and the UK. They are often mistaken as immigrants directly from India\, but are culturally different. They are a mixture of Indian\, Caribbean\, British Colonial\, and Native cultures. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenters Antika Singh\, MSEd and Dakashna Lang\, EdD\n\nPD Certificate will be provided by NJEA
