The festival’s completely in-person screenings\, panel discussions\, and other programs will be centered around the AMC Kabuki in San Francisco Japantown\, highlighting the city’s long history as a hub for Asian American community building with national impact.  \n“After 2025\, a year of historic challenges and change for the media\, 2026 is shaping up as a time of renewed vigor for Asian American independent storytellers\,” says CAAM Executive Director Donald Young. “The energy of the future is palpable. CAAMFest 2026 in many ways returns us to our roots\, with an ethos that is scrappy\, inspired\, and full of attitude.” \nThis year’s festival also includes five World Premiere films and an increased focus on showcasing documentaries funded or produced by the San Francisco-based Center for Asian American Media (CAAM)\, which produces CAAMFest. Opening Night will begin at the AMC Kabuki Theater with an advance screening of the documentary feature The A-List: 15 Stories from Asian and Pacific Diasporas. Following the film\, CAAM will host a Gala at the Asian Art Museum featuring tastes of the most talked about Asian American food and beverages in the Bay Area.  \nAlong with the film screenings\, CAAMFest also includes the Filmmaker Summit and Industry Hub\, a free event attracting filmmakers from around the nation to discuss the topics facing independent creatives who are focused on undertold stories.  \n“CAAM doesn’t just showcase Asian American stories\, we also play an integral role in the pipeline of unique stories that reflect the experiences of our communities\,” says CAAM Talent Development and Special Projects Director Sapana Sakya. “We’re proud to screen 19 CAAM supported documentaries in this year’s festival.” \nAcross the over 60 films that will be shown at this year’s festival\, thematic throughlines are emerging. \n“Each feature film that we programmed included characters that were morally conflicted\, went against the grain\, and shook the status quo\,” says CAAMFest Program Manager Dino-Ray Ramos. “The stories featured flawed people that defied the model minority myth and subverted stereotypical ‘good Asian’ behavior. Along with similarly themed and defiant documentaries\, we were subconsciously building a program of bad Asians causing good trouble.”

This magical theatrical production of drama\, dance and song has been entertaining audiences for more than 45 years. In the preschool years students may begin by taking part in the ever-popular forest animal scene. Gradually they work their way through various small parts as dancers\, singers\, monkeys\, demons\, and martial artists until they finally emerge in the lead roles in their high school years. Behind the scenes\, a large supporting cast of parents\, teachers\, alumni and Mount Madonna Center staff take on the roles of prop makers\, costumers\, makeup artists\, technicians\, musicians\, stage crew\, and concessionaires. This makes the “Ramayana!” our largest school event of the year.

DESCRIPTION:Salsa\, Bharatanatyam and Kathak and A Fully New\, Composed\, Crossover Live Musical Score Share a NYC Stage for the First Time in When the Sun Rises\, a New Work from Baila Society and Navatman \n  \nWorld-premiere collaboration debuts June 26 at the Ailey Citigroup Theater with an original score performed live by musicians spanning Latin and Indian traditions \n  \nNEW YORK — Baila Society and Navatman will present the world premiere of When the Sun Rises\, an evening-length work bringing together salsa\, Latin hustle\, bharatanatyam and kathak under a single original score\, June 26 through 28 at the Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater. \nIt is the second production in the two organizations’ “Roots of Resilience” series and\, according to the directors\, the first time these four forms have been staged together as a single choreographic and musical work in New York. The score\, composed across nearly two years of rehearsal-room collaboration\, will be performed live by nine musicians from both traditions. \nThe piece arrives at a moment when conversations about immigration\, cultural belonging and the erasure of minority communities have intensified across the country. When the Sun Rises is structured as a response: a series of movements that trace separation\, loss\, grief and the slow work of building something together across differences. \n  \n“We kept returning to the same question in the studio\,” said Ahtoy Juliana\, Founder of BAILA Society and co-director of the production. “What does it mean to make work that honors where it comes from\, in a moment when so much is being taken from people who look like us\, sound like us\, and are considered outsiders here? We didn’t want to make the show just about the problem. We wanted to make a show that is the answer.” \n  \nSahasra Sambamoorthi\, artistic director and co-founder of Navatman said the collaboration was built deliberately around the concept of digging deeper into the traditions and structure – rather than trying to create something “new”. “We created an original musical composition of Indian and Afro-Cuban motifs. Creating this in this moment in time was more than a bit challenging\, but we felt\, with every fiber of our being\, that it was urgently necessary. Who better to care for our art than those who live and breathe it? And\, in doing so\, we were able to discover more about our traditions than we could have imagined possible.” \n  \nThe original score features Lulada Club musicians Andrea Chavarro\, Katherine Ocampo and Daniela Serna alongside Ayamey Bell Torriente\, Juan Pulido\, Radhika Iyer\, Shraman Sen and Sanjay Natesan\, with compositional consultation from 5-time Grammy nominated percussionist Manuel Marquez and musical direction by Sahasra Sambamoorthi herself.  \n  \nThe work moves through Afro-Cuban rumba and son\, flamenco-inflected passages\, kathak tabla and tatkaar sequences\, bharatanatyam varnam and salsa rhythmic forms\, and an extended finale built around the question of what a community looks like when its women\, children and elders lead it. \n  \nThe production runs across three nights. The full-company professional program\, When the Sun Rises\, performs Friday\, June 26 at 8 p.m.\, Saturday\, June 27 at 7:30 p.m.\, and Sunday\, June 28 at 3 p.m. A companion program\, The Journey Begins\, featuring student and emerging dancers from both organizations\, performs Saturday\, June 27 at 2:30 p.m. \n  \nTickets are $38\, $50 and $75 and are available now at navatman.org.
