SUMMARY:CAAMFest 2026 Spotlights Independent Filmmaking and Unexpected Stories From Asian America
DESCRIPTION:  \nSAN FRANCISCO\, April 2\, 2026 — CAAMFest is returning for its 44th year\, May 7-10\, 2026\, featuring over 60 films that capture the current zeitgeist of Asian American communities. The festival’s completely in-person screenings\, panel discussions\, and other programs will be centered around the AMC Kabuki in San Francisco Japantown\, highlighting the city’s long history as a hub for Asian American community building with national impact.  \n“After 2025\, a year of historic challenges and change for the media\, 2026 is shaping up as a time of renewed vigor for Asian American independent storytellers\,” says CAAM Executive Director Donald Young. “The energy of the future is palpable. CAAMFest 2026 in many ways returns us to our roots\, with an ethos that is scrappy\, inspired\, and full of attitude.” \nThis year’s festival also includes five World Premiere films and an increased focus on showcasing documentaries funded or produced by the San Francisco-based Center for Asian American Media (CAAM)\, which produces CAAMFest. Opening Night will begin at the AMC Kabuki Theater with an advance screening of the documentary feature The A-List: 15 Stories from Asian and Pacific Diasporas. Following the film\, CAAM will host a Gala at the Asian Art Museum featuring tastes of the most talked about Asian American food and beverages in the Bay Area.  \nAlong with the film screenings\, CAAMFest also includes the Filmmaker Summit and Industry Hub\, a free event attracting filmmakers from around the nation to discuss the topics facing independent creatives who are focused on undertold stories.  \n“CAAM doesn’t just showcase Asian American stories\, we also play an integral role in the pipeline of unique stories that reflect the experiences of our communities\,” says CAAM Talent Development and Special Projects Director Sapana Sakya. “We’re proud to screen 19 CAAM supported documentaries in this year’s festival.” \nAcross the over 60 films that will be shown at this year’s festival\, thematic throughlines are emerging. \n“Each feature film that we programmed included characters that were morally conflicted\, went against the grain\, and shook the status quo\,” says CAAMFest Program Manager Dino-Ray Ramos. “The stories featured flawed people that defied the model minority myth and subverted stereotypical ‘good Asian’ behavior. Along with similarly themed and defiant documentaries\, we were subconsciously building a program of bad Asians causing good trouble.”

Behind the scenes\, a large supporting cast of parents\, teachers\, alumni and Mount Madonna Center staff take on the roles of prop makers\, costumers\, makeup artists\, technicians\, musicians\, stage crew\, and concessionaires. SUMMARY:A Doll’s House at Sunnyvale Theatre
DESCRIPTION:A DOLL’s HOUSE \nWritten by Basab Pradhan \nDirected by Rita Bhatia \nJun 5-12\, 2026 \nSunnyvale Theatre \n550 E Remington Dr\, Sunnyvale\, CA 94087 \nIn a middle-class Bay Area home\, Naina and Tarun look like the model Indian-American couple – good kids\, a hard-won startup\, Diwali around the corner. SUMMARY:Spotlights the Traditional Hindustani Music
DESCRIPTION:Sierra Madre Playhouse \nSpotlights the Traditional Hindustani Music of\nTrailblazing Violinist Indradeep Ghosh\, \nCellist Chris Votek\, \nand Tabla Virtuoso Neelamjit Dhillon\n \nArtists Merge String Traditions from the East to Create a New Format for the Ancient Music of North India \n  \nSunday\, June 14\, 2026\, 4:00 PM\, at Sierra Madre Playhouse\n \n(Sierra Madre\, CA – May 22\, 2026) A trio of trailblazing musicians featuring violinist Indradeep Ghosh\, cellist Chris Votek\, and tabla player Neelamjit Dhillon present traditional ragas on Sunday\, June 14\, 2026\, 4:00 PM\, at Sierra Madre Playhouse. The concert\, a meeting of strings and rhythm at the confluence of Hindustani classical tradition and Western chamber sensibility\, offers a rare opportunity to experience the string-based voice of Indian classical music and its modern articulation. \n  \nGhosh’s evocative violin lines\, Votek’s cello voice in dialog\, and Dhillon’s tabla cycles create both foundation and spark. Their extraordinary vision for music-making is rooted in a profound respect for tradition and a keen desire to expand musical horizons through the seamless interaction of tradition and innovation. The result is an immersive musical journey that invites listeners to follow unfolding sound and shifting textures. \n  \nGhosh leads the trio with a violin modified to blend the tonal richness of Hindustani raga and sympathetic-string resonance\, inviting deep expressive explorations of melody and tone. Votek is one of very few cellists in the world fluent in the language of Hindustani music; his work adapts the vocal-style (gayaki-ang) vocabulary of raga to the cello with striking clarity and emotional power. Dhillon anchors the ensemble on the tabla with rhythmic virtuosity\, guiding the music’s unfolding shape with subtlety\, depth and drive.\nFor tickets ($12-$35) and information\, please call 626.355.4318 or visit www.sierramadreplayhouse.org. SUMMARY:A Historic Moment for Afro-Cuban\, Latin & Indian Arts
DESCRIPTION:Salsa\, Bharatanatyam and Kathak and A Fully New\, Composed\, Crossover Live Musical Score Share a NYC Stage for the First Time in When the Sun Rises\, a New Work from Baila Society and Navatman \n  \nWorld-premiere collaboration debuts June 26 at the Ailey Citigroup Theater with an original score performed live by musicians spanning Latin and Indian traditions \n  \nNEW YORK — Baila Society and Navatman will present the world premiere of When the Sun Rises\, an evening-length work bringing together salsa\, Latin hustle\, bharatanatyam and kathak under a single original score\, June 26 through 28 at the Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater. \nIt is the second production in the two organizations’ “Roots of Resilience” series and\, according to the directors\, the first time these four forms have been staged together as a single choreographic and musical work in New York. The score\, composed across nearly two years of rehearsal-room collaboration\, will be performed live by nine musicians from both traditions. \nThe piece arrives at a moment when conversations about immigration\, cultural belonging and the erasure of minority communities have intensified across the country. When the Sun Rises is structured as a response: a series of movements that trace separation\, loss\, grief and the slow work of building something together across differences. \n  \n“We kept returning to the same question in the studio\,” said Ahtoy Juliana\, Founder of BAILA Society and co-director of the production. “What does it mean to make work that honors where it comes from\, in a moment when so much is being taken from people who look like us\, sound like us\, and are considered outsiders here? We didn’t want to make the show just about the problem. We wanted to make a show that is the answer.” \n  \nSahasra Sambamoorthi\, artistic director and co-founder of Navatman said the collaboration was built deliberately around the concept of digging deeper into the traditions and structure – rather than trying to create something “new”. “We created an original musical composition of Indian and Afro-Cuban motifs. Creating this in this moment in time was more than a bit challenging\, but we felt\, with every fiber of our being\, that it was urgently necessary. Who better to care for our art than those who live and breathe it? And\, in doing so\, we were able to discover more about our traditions than we could have imagined possible.” \n  \nThe original score features Lulada Club musicians Andrea Chavarro\, Katherine Ocampo and Daniela Serna alongside Ayamey Bell Torriente\, Juan Pulido\, Radhika Iyer\, Shraman Sen and Sanjay Natesan\, with compositional consultation from 5-time Grammy nominated percussionist Manuel Marquez and musical direction by Sahasra Sambamoorthi herself.  \n  \nThe work moves through Afro-Cuban rumba and son\, flamenco-inflected passages\, kathak tabla and tatkaar sequences\, bharatanatyam varnam and salsa rhythmic forms\, and an extended finale built around the question of what a community looks like when its women\, children and elders lead it. \n  \nThe production runs across three nights. The full-company professional program\, When the Sun Rises\, performs Friday\, June 26 at 8 p.m.\, Saturday\, June 27 at 7:30 p.m.\, and Sunday\, June 28 at 3 p.m. A companion program\, The Journey Begins\, featuring student and emerging dancers from both organizations\, performs Saturday\, June 27 at 2:30 p.m. \n  \nTickets are $38\, $50 and $75 and are available now at navatman.org. When the Sun Rises contains material some viewers may find intense and is not recommended for children under five. \n  \nPress tickets and high-resolution rehearsal imagery are available on request. \n  \nAbout Navatman \nFounded in 2008\, Navatman is a New York–based Indian classical performing arts organization presenting bharatanatyam\, kathak and Carnatic vocal work through its professional company and community school. Its founding director\, Sahasra Sambamoorthi\, has been described in the South Asian arts press as part of a generation reshaping how Indian classical forms are understood and presented in the United States. \n  \nAbout Baila Society \nBaila Society is a New York Latin dance organization founded by Ahtoy Juliana\, focused on salsa\, Latin hustle and the social-dance lineages of the South Bronx and Spanish Harlem. Its work centers on cultural preservation\, embodied archival research\, and the social and political histories that shaped the music and movement. \n  \nAbout “Roots of Resilience” \nWhen the Sun Rises is the second production in the multi-year “Roots of Resilience” collaboration between Baila Society and Navatman\, which began in 2025. The series brings the two organizations’ professional and student communities together to create new work at the intersection of Latin and Indian performing traditions. \n  \nPerformance details: \nWhen the Sun Rises and The Journey Begins \nAlvin Ailey Citigroup Theater \n405 W 55th St\, New York\, NY 10019 \nJune 26 – 28\, 2026 \nTickets: www.navatman.org/bailasociety2026 \nEmail: support@navatman.org

SUMMARY:BHANGRA & BEATS NIGHT MARKET RETURNS FOR 2026 SEASON
DESCRIPTION:BHANGRA & BEATS NIGHT MARKET RETURNS FOR 2026 SEASON — AND FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER\, TAKES OVER YERBA BUENA GARDENS \nSan Francisco’s biggest South Asian cultural celebration brings its signature “Bhangra meets Bay Area energy” to one of downtown’s most iconic arts destinations \n\nSAN FRANCISCO\, CA — San Francisco’s beloved Bhangra & Beats Night Market returns this summer with a major new milestone: for the first time ever\, the event will take place at Yerba Buena Gardens\, one of downtown’s most celebrated cultural and arts destinations. \nSet for July 24 from 4–9 p.m.\, the night market will transform Yerba Buena Gardens\, Jessie Square\, and Yerba Buena Lane into a vibrant festival of music\, dance\, food\, and culture. Organizers also announced that the event will return later this year with San Francisco’s Official Diwali Celebration in November\, scheduled for November 13. \n\nBhangra and Beats Night Market is presented by Into The Streets and Non Stop Bhangra in partnership with Yerba Buena Partnership\,  Mayor’s Office of Daniel Lurie\, the San Francisco Office of Economic Workforce Development\, and  Yerba Buena Gardens Festival\, with support from  The Svane Family Foundation Fund Culture Forward Grant program. \n\n“Bhangra & Beats Night Market is one of San Francisco’s liveliest night markets\, and bringing this celebration to Yerba Buena Gardens will draw thousands of residents and visitors downtown\,” said Mayor Daniel Lurie. “As San Francisco continues to rise\, events like this are helping turn our public spaces into vibrant\, welcoming destinations\, while supporting small businesses and our downtown recovery.”  \nSince launching in 2023\, Bhangra & Beats Night Market has helped define a new era of street events in San Francisco. Before night markets and street parties spread across the city\, the event helped demonstrate the power of cultural street events as a model for economic revitalization and community building downtown\, serving as a beacon of  inspiration amid  what seemed like an inescapable doom loop narrative. \nIn just three years\, the event has welcomed more than 75\,000 attendees and generated $4.36 million in spending for downtown businesses and the small\, local vendors that make up its vibrant multicultural bazaars. The event has also been voted Best Night Market for two consecutive years by 48Hills\, cementing its place as one of the city’s most beloved cultural gatherings. \n“Bhangra & Beats Night Market is a great example of cultural events supporting local businesses and creating vibrant public experiences for everyone to enjoy\,” said Anne Taupier\, Executive Director\, Office of Economic and Workforce Development. “Events like this create a lively atmosphere in neighborhoods and bring opportunities for local restaurants\, artists\, vendors\, and small businesses to connect with the community. We’re excited to welcome thousands of locals and visitors into our city’s arts and culture hub at Yerba Buena for this incredible celebration of South Asian culture.” \nThe event holds a unique distinction as the only outdoor celebration of its size and scale in the Bay Area dedicated to South Asian culture\, serving as a platform for pride\, expression\, and cultural connection. Attendees of all ages regularly show up dressed in vibrant traditional attire\, dancing together and celebrating the rich heritage of the South Asian diaspora through food\, music\, and performance. \n“Bhangra & Beats has become a joyful gathering point for the South Asian diaspora and the entire Bay Area\,” said Into The Streets CEO and Founder Katy Birnbaum.  “Moving to Yerba Buena Gardens opens up an incredible new canvas for the event while bringing thousands of people into one of downtown’s most important cultural districts.”\n\nAt the heart of the celebration is its signature atmosphere: a family-friendly Indian rave where traditional Punjabi rhythms meet Bay Area nightlife energy. Non Stop Bhangra\, the legendary Bay Area collective\, will once again lead  entertainment with its trademark mix of DJs\, live drummers\, dancers\, and community participation.  \n“We’re really excited to be bringing Bhangra & Beats into Yerba Buena Gardens this year. We’ve had the joy of performing there over the years\, so it’s especially meaningful to now curate a full experience in the space. Yerba Buena Gardens has long celebrated world music and culture\, and we’re grateful to be part of that celebration—bringing Punjabi music and Indian culture to one of downtown’s most iconic arts destinations. It feels like a natural home for what the event has grown into—open\, vibrant\, and rooted in community\,” said Non Stop Bhangra Co-Founder Vicki Virk.  \nThe new Yerba Buena Gardens location will allow the festival to expand across multiple spaces. Jessie Square\, Yerba Buena Gardens\,\, and Yerba Buena Lane will feature: \n\n\nLive Bhangra music and dance \n\n\nCultural performances \n\n\nRestaurant and Bar Specials \n\n\nOutdoor marketplace with food\, retail and community-based vendors \n\n\nFamily-friendly activities \n\n\nPlenty of space to dance \n\n\nBecause Jessie Square and Yerba Buena Lane are designated Entertainment Zones\, attendees will be able to sip and stroll with drinks throughout the event area\, creating a lively festival atmosphere in the heart of downtown’s Yerba Buena neighborhood. \n “Bhangra & Beats mirrors the energy and excitement in Yerba Buena today\,” said Yerba Buena Partnership Executive Director Scott Rowitz. “The city and neighborhood partners have redefined the Yerba Buena experience with festivals\, Entertainment Zone events and hospitality programs. Bhangra & Beats is an ideal fit with our incredible  local and international mix of arts\, culture\, cafes\, dining and entertainment. We’re thrilled to support the event and encourage everyone to explore the new Yerba Buena.”  \nThis year also marks a new partnership with the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival\, which is embracing Bhangra & Beats Night Market and welcoming it into its season—helping to amplify\, promote\, and elevate the event as part of its celebrated lineup of free cultural programming.\n\n“Yerba Buena Gardens Festival is beyond excited to welcome Bhangra & Beats into the full season of incredible admission-free cultural events we present each summer in Yerba Buena Gardens\,” said Festival Managing Director Cristina Ibarra. “We’ve worked with Non Stop Bhangra for many years and love the high octane energy and cultural artistry they bring to every event they’re a part of. We can’t wait for this event to come to Yerba Buena!” \nThe November edition will mark the return of San Francisco’s Official Diwali Celebration\, which Bhangra & Beats Night Market helped pioneer. The event led the way in hosting the City and County of San Francisco’s first Diwali celebration\, helping elevate recognition of the holiday across the region. Since then\, awareness and celebration of Diwali have continued to grow — with California now recognizing Diwali as an official state holiday. \nAttendees are encouraged to RSVP for free.
