Over three evenings\, an extraordinary Indian cast at the height of their art will bring to life epic tales from the Mahābhārata and Ramayana with dazzling costumes\, vibrant music\, and breathtaking storytelling. These world-class artists have performed on some of the greatest stages in India and abroad\, and now they bring their mastery to the intimate setting of our West Oakland studio. Up close\, you’ll feel the power of the drums\, hear every nuance of the singers\, and see the fine details of costume and makeup in rare close-up. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness Kathakali at its highest level. \nKalyana Sougandhikam was written by Kottayath Thamburan based on events in the Mahābhārata during the Pandavas’ vanavasa ( exile in the forest ) at Kamyaka Forest. While staying near the Gandhamadana Mountains\, Draupadi sees a rare Sougandhika flower and asks Bhima to find more. Determined to fulfill her wish\, Bhima sets out through the forest\, using his great strength to push through obstacles until he reaches the Kadali forest. There\, his loud journey disturbs Hanuman\, who is meditating. Realizing it’s his younger brother\, Hanuman decides to teach Bhima a lesson in humility by posing as a weak old monkey blocking the path. Bhima\, unable to move the monkey’s tail\, realizes the truth. Hanuman then reveals his identity\, blesses Bhima\, and guides him to the flower\, after which Bhima resumes his journey.

The Grammy-winning ensemble had commissioned Hussain to compose Murmurs in Time—a work that combines the beauty and complexity of Hindustani classical music with the group’s new-music ethos. In it\, Salar Nader\, a tabla virtuoso and disciple of Hussain since age seven\, performs his teacher’s part in the ensemble. Nader’s study of classical tabla is sharply honed from years of performance with South Asian musicians and his completion of an intensive program in Mumbai. The performance’s program also includes newly commissioned works from composers/performers Jessie Montgomery\, Tigran Hamasyan\, and Jlin\, and a solo performance by Nader.

He learned Tabla from various gurus in Pune and most recently with Arshad Syed ji (disciple of Ustad Alla Rakha) in California. Amit also studied nylon string guitar from Stanford professor Charles Fergusson. \nIn 2014\, Amit embarked on a new musical journey by studying the Sarod under the tutelage of two great masters – Shri Bruce Hamm\, a disciple of the revered Ustad Ali Akbar Khan\, and Shri Abhisek Lahiri\, a disciple of the renowned Shri Alok Lahiri. The Sarod’s unique tone and versatility captivated Amit\, and he has been passionately exploring the instrument’s intricacies ever since. \nAmit’s performances are characterized by his masterful command of rhythm\, his deep emotional connection to the music\, and his ability to evoke the essence of traditional ragas. Over the past 15 years\, Skanda has grown into an avid performer of the percussion instrument with solos and group ensembles and accompaniment to his credit. Skanda is now under the rigorous training and tutelage of Pt. Swapan Chaudhuri at the Ali Akbar College of Music.
