SUMMARY:2-Day 25th Mahasivaratri Dance Celebration
DESCRIPTION: \nPlease consider this as our personal invitation to attend the 25th Mahasivaratri Dance Celebration. Your presence will bring us immense joy knowing you support this event. Please enjoy the beautiful /unique offerings of the artists\, on the auspicious occasion of Mahasivaratri. The artists are listed in the attached flier. \nI encourage you to forward to your students\, schools and friends who you think will enjoy the event. \nDate: Feb 14th\, Sat (3-6pm) and Feb15\, Sun (6:30-9:30) \nVenue: Urban Sanctuary San Jose\, 80 S\, 5th Street\, CA 95112 \nParking : 4th Street Garage\, downtown San Jose. \nRSVP anuradhap@sbcglobal.net\, or kavita@gmail.com\nRequest from Hosts: Please plan for time to park and be seated 15 minutes prior to the start of the event.\nPlease stay for the whole event as a courtesy to the dancers. \nThe theme for this year\, “A Rose by any other name…..” \, suggests that the Devi (Divine Mother) is present in each of us. On Saturday\, the dancers show how each of us apprehend the Devi in our own unique way. Feb. 14th also happens to be Valentine’s day\, a perfect day to celebrate Devi\, the personification of Love \nAs we flow into Sunday\, Feb 15\, the verse “Asatoma Sad Gamaya…” serves as an inspiration. The evening will bring out the play/ display of Prakriti. When players lose their sense of play\, and get entrapped in untruth\, darkness and fear\, the only way out is the way in – towards the center! We seek the divine fragrance that is so subtle\, we forget it is everywhere. \nThe underlying theme of these 2 days is gratitude; the gratitude to the Devi – the nurturer of the Arts\, the Gurus – who help us stay in touch with the divine fragrance\, and to Lord Shiva – the compassionate one\, and yes – gratitude for all your support and participation these 25 years. \nWe welcome our visual artists of our community and thank them for sharing their artwork in both physical and virtual display. Interestingly\, the picture in the flier is also from a painting on glass by Pameena Galler. We have Dance Theater and Sound Healing as special additions to our evening of Classical Indian Dances. \nA big thanks to Reverend Dana Bainbridge of Urban Sanctuary Church for allowing us this beautiful facility to hold our event. Smita has been the brainchild to bring the visual artists together\, and I thank her for her many suggestions and support. Kavita Thirumalai has been amazing in helping bring everything together seamlessly. A big thanks to all the volunteers who are supporting this event and many more who have helped in the past years.

SUMMARY:15th Annual Films of Remembrance | Feb 21 & 22 in SF and San Jose
DESCRIPTION:SAN FRANCISCO\, Calif. — A carefully curated selection of 10 engaging films shedding light on a little-known chapter of American history while serving as powerful lessons for today’s assaults on civil liberties will be presented at the 15th annual Films of Remembrance on Feb. 21-22 in Northern California’s Bay Area and March 28-29 in Southern California. The event is the premier showcase of films commemorating the forced incarceration of more than 120\,000 people of Japanese descent in American concentration camps during World War II\, most of whom were American citizens.\n\nSelections range from creative animated or narrative shorts\, to impactful short and feature-length documentaries\, with the Showcase Presentation of the award-winning film Third Act. Some films even add some humor. \n“At a time when the history of people of color is being sanitized\, and celebrations of our experiences are being erased from federal government agencies\, it’s all the more important that we remember the destruction of civil liberties during World War II and its lessons for today\,” said Kenji G. Taguma\, executive producer of Films of Remembrance and president of its presenting organization\, the Nichi Bei Foundation. “In the face of such sanitization\, remembrance is resistance to erasure. We cannot let our history be marginalized again. There’s just too much at stake.” \n“I feel that all of the films are important and relevant\,” added UC San Diego Ethnic Studies Professor Christen Sasaki\, Ph.D.\, a Films of Remembrance Committee member. “In the classroom I always tell my students that history is alive and occurring in the present. We can all learn so much about the present by learning about the past — from mass incarceration to community building and resistance.” \nFilms of Remembrance commemorates the signing of Executive Order 9066 by then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt\, which put the wheels in motion to uproot a people. \nAccording to California State University\, Sacramento Ethnic Studies Professor Wendi Yamashita\, Ph.D.\, such films are more important now than ever\, as President Donald Trump is invoking the Enemy Aliens Act of 1798 to justify his plans for mass deportation — the very act that “was used to justify our incarceration.” \n“These films are always relevant because they document an important moment in U.S. history that teaches us about the fragility of American democracy and civil rights\,” explained Yamashita\, a Nichi Bei Foundation board member. “Today\, we are seeing the violent erasure of history by the federal government\, and these films refuse that erasure. These films remember state violence and explore the lingering trauma of state violence in deeply personal and intimate ways.” \n“I really loved Kioku: Remembrance because it provided me with so much hope\,” reflected Yamashita\, a member of the Films of Remembrance Committee. “It was so powerful to see students of all ethnic backgrounds who were so passionate about preservation and JA incarceration history in their hometown. I also appreciated Yonsei and Misadventures of a Nisei Week Queen for the way it explored Japanese American girl/womanhood in relationship to incarceration and identity. I could really connect with these films.” \n“I appreciate the fact that many of the filmmakers are expanding how we think about incarceration to think about its enduring impact through generations — as generational trauma but also generational healing\,” added Sasaki. “One of the films that I’m particularly looking forward to seeing is Tad Nakamura’s Third Act. Having gone through the UCLA Asian American Masters program and being a part of Asian American Studies\, I’ve felt Bob (Nakamura’s) impact on the community.” \nThis year\, thanks to Presenting Sponsorship from The Henri and Tomoye Takahashi Charitable Foundation\, Films of Remembrance is once expanding from a two-day event in Northern California to a four-day event including two days in Southern California — in partnership with the Japanese American National Museum and the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute. \nProceeds benefit the Wayne Maeda Educational Fund. Partial proceeds from ticket sales at Films of Remembrance will be donated by the Nichi Bei Foundation to local nonprofits. \nFor tickets and more information on this year’s event\, visit 2026.filmsofremembrance.org. \nVenues:\nSaturday\, Feb. 21\, 2026\, 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.\nAMC Kabuki 8\, 1881 Post St.\, San Francisco Japantown \nSunday\, Feb. 22\, 2026\, 11:30 a.m. to 7:15 p.m.\nSan Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin Annex\, 640 N. SUMMARY:This Is Now with Angie Coiro: Daisy Hernández
DESCRIPTION:Daisy Hernández joins us to discuss her provocative\, personal\, blazingly intelligent examination of who deserves American citizenship.\n\n\n\nDaisy Hernández joins us to discuss Citizenship\, her provocative\, personal\, blazingly intelligent examination of one of the most vexing questions facing the United States today: Who is\, and should be\, a citizen? \nDescribed by Jose Antonio Vargas as “the book I have always wanted to read\,” Daisy Hernández fiercely interrogates one of the most complicated subjects of contemporary life and politics: citizenship. Braiding memoir\, history\, and cultural criticism\, she exposes the truths and lies of how we define ourselves as a country and a people. Turning to her own family’s stories—her mother arrived from Colombia\, while her father was a political refugee from Castro’s Cuba—Hernández shows how the very idea of citizenship is a myth\, one of the stories we tell ourselves about the American soul and psyche. \nReframing our understanding of what it means to be an American\, Citizenship is an urgent and necessary account of the laws\, customs\, and language we use to include and exclude\, especially those who come from Latin America. With her scholar’s mind and memoirist’s gift for narrative\, Hernández weaves a story both personal and national\, while reckoning with our country’s ongoing debate about who belongs and providing fresh ways of thinking about citizenship. At once bracing\, fearless\, and tender\, Citizenship is a powerful portrait of one family’s experiences in the borderlands of citizenship and an honest illumination of the country in which we live. \nDaisy Hernández will be in conversation with journalist Angie Coiro. \nCOVID SAFETY PROTOCOLS: We strongly encourage attendees to wear masks at our events\, although they will NOT be required. We will have masks available for attendees who want them. SUMMARY:Delhi-based Contemporary Artist Seema Kohli
DESCRIPTION:Pacific Art League\nFebruary 27 – March 1\, 2026 \nOpening Reception: Friday\, February 27\, 5:30 to 8:30pm\nJanuary 2026\, Palo Alto\, CA –Celebrate a special engagement with one of India’s most distinguished contemporary artists\, Seema Kohli and her acclaimed artwork for five-days this February 2026 across Palo Alto at Stanford University\, the Pacific Art League\, Palo Alto Art Center\, and in Santa Clara at the Triton Museum. Kohli’s limited-time Bay Area exhibition\, Samsara & Metamorphosis: The Mystical World of Seema Kohli\, and programming engagement is made possible by Laasya Art and founder Sonia Patwardhan. The exhibition will present Kohli’s most recent paintings\, providing Bay Area collectors and art enthusiasts with a unique opportunity to view Kohli’s works in person. Known for her intricate\, surreal explorations of feminine power\, Seema Kohli creates multilayered narratives drawn from mythology\, spirituality\, and philosophy. For over four decades\, she has developed a distinctive body of work rooted in India’s ancient spiritual and mythological traditions\, while remaining deeply connected to the concerns of the present. \nRather than treating myth as a relic of the past\, Kohli approaches it as a living\, evolving language—one that brings together personal memory and lived experience to explore ideas of time\, identity\, and transformation. Her immersive visual worlds invite reflection and inner inquiry\, offering viewers a space where ancient wisdom and contemporary life meet. Her work is inspired by the generative forces of nature—its cycles of growth\, dissolution\, and\nrenewal. Central to Kohli’s visual language is Shakti\, the transformative power of the divine feminine. Kohli uses the womb as a potent symbol of creation and possibility\, exploring transformation within the eternal cycles of birth and death. Kohli’s practice weaves together diverse philosophical traditions\, informing her exploration of the body as a sacred vessel and a site of inner knowledge. Her use of 24-karat gold and silver leaf\, textiles\, metal\, and recycled yarn evoke ritual\, care\, and reverence within material form. Through what she describes as a process of “re-mythologizing” modern life\, Kohli offers a powerful counterpoint to a fragmented world—reanimating the sacred feminine as a source of imagination\, healing\, and freedom\, where the ancient and contemporary exist in luminous harmony. \nA self-taught artist who believes each creator discovers their own visual language\, she has developed a distinctive approach that honors women as powerful\, spiritual beings. Her paintings incorporate sacred symbols—from lotus flowers to the Tree of Life—while delving into themes of identity\, liberation\, and the divine feminine. Notes Kohli\, “My work begins in the body and returns to it. I use myth as a tool\, not to escape the present but to enter it more sharply\, to hold what is unresolved: memory and rupture\, desire and devotion\, tenderness and violence. Through gilding\, stitching\, layering pigment\, and inscribing yantras and texts\, I build images as thresholds\, spaces where the personal and the cosmic can collide without hierarchy. The faceless figure is not an absence; it is a refusal of fixed identity and a site of multiplicity\, a body that can become archetype\, witness\, vessel. Repetition is central to my practice. It is labor\, but also ritual\, a daily sadhana through which the image arrives and the self is re-made. I want the work to act like a ritual: slow\, durational\, transformative\, insisting that the sacred is immanent and made through attention.” \nKohli’s artistic journey reflects continual transformation and authenticity. Her practice spans painting\, murals\, films\, installations\, and sculpture\, showcasing her remarkable versatility. Her work stands out for its mix of spiritual richness and contemporary relevance\, exploring feminine identity\, self-realization\, and the pursuit of authenticity—ideas that resonate today while remaining rooted in timeless philosophical traditions.\n###\nSpecial Events (full programming descriptions below)\nFebruary 24: Workshop: Triton Museum\, Santa Clara\, 11 am – 1:30 pm\nFebruary 24: Artist Talk and Poetry Narration: Stanford University\, 7pm\nFebruary 25: Workshop: Pacific Art League\, 11 am – 1:30 pm\, Palo Alto\, CA \nFebruary 26: Artist Talk: Palo Alto Art Center at 6:30 pm\nFebruary 27 – March 1: Exhibition at Pacific Art League\, Palo Alto\, CA \nSeema Kohli\, Rising of the Kundalini-Spiritual Awakening\, Acrylic and ink with 24 carat gold and silver leaf Seema Kohli: Exhibition & Events\, February 2026 \nExhibition at Pacific Art League\nSamsara & Metamorphosis: The Mystical World of Seema Kohli\nFriday\, February 27 – Sunday\, March 1\, 2026\nOpen to the public: 11 am – 6 pm\nOpening Reception:\nFriday\, February 27\, 5.30 – 8.30 pm\nEvent Programming Schedule\n1) Workshop at Pacific Art League\nTuesday\, February 24\, 2026\n11 am – 1.30 pm\nTitle: The Texture of Remembering\nDescription: This immersive workshop invites participants (18+) to explore how sense memory—smell\, taste\, sound\, and vision—shapes consciousness and the politics of aesthetics. With bija mantra recitations and insights connecting a mandala installation gifted by SACHI to the Palo Alto Art Center\, this talk offers a resonant exploration of art\, reflection\, and interconnectedness. \nAbout the Artist Seema Kohli (b. 1960) is a multi-disciplinary artist working through the imagination of mythical and fantastical worlds from a eco feminist eye. Engaging with visual and performative mediums\, Kohli explores the themes of beauty and sensuality echoed in philosophy and spirituality studies across civilization. Her work primarily celebrates the cosmic feminine and its relationship to forces of creation and destruction. There is a focused engagement with the concept of Hiranayagarbha or The Golden Womb; she attempts to create new artistic identities by reshaping belongings\, bringing the past and the present into a dialogue through a process of decay\, hybridization and transformation. \nFor Kohli\, an experimental artist\, poetry is a recorded conversation between her\, the canvas\, and the rendered image. Where they are all living conscious being worthy of responding with emotions and sensitivity. Though she has been performing to her poetry as narratives\, in 2013 she self-published a compilation of verses\, “I Am” which was performed at TEDx\, Chennai. The second book “Experiencing The Goddesses” she is co-author and editor. She is already working on co-authoring the third book\, and one which is a compilation of her own poetry written in the last 17 years. \nSpanning over five decades of experiments in form and language\, Kohli’s works live in multiple museums and institutional collections all over the world\, including the British Museum (UK)\, MAP\, Bangalore\, India\, Kiran Nadar Museum of Arts (India)\, Partition Museum\, Birth Rites Collection (UK)\, Rubin Museum (USA\, Phoenix Museum of Art (Arizona\, USA) Bihar Museum(Patna)\, Bharat Bhavan\, Lalit Kala Akademie (India) NGMA(Bangalore) to name a few.
