SUMMARY:"Things Felt But Not Quite Expressed | Book Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Things Felt But Not Quite Expressed collects Sohrab Hura’s kinetic illustrations made between 2022 and 2024 of everyday scenes of love\, joy\, family\, and relationships. Renowned for his self-published photographic books\, here Hura departs from the fixedness of the photographic form\, using technicolor soft pastel to imbue his portraits\, and still life and quotidian scenes with fluidity and to charge them with feeling. We see tender portraits of ailing family members\, vivid sunsets and free-flowing bodies of water\, mischievous pets and siblings\, spectral figures meeting in unrefined landscapes\, and surreal cremation rites. Portraits of isolation and illness are interleaved with recreated memes and convivial tableaux. The sardonic titles of the works collude with the viewer to poke fun at the drawings’ subjects but also at the artist himself\, creating an intimate viewing experience.

DESCRIPTION:The Cantor Arts Center at Stanford is hosting a unique and excellent exhibition\, Spirit House. \nIn a thematic exploration of the work of thirty-three Asian American and Asian diasporic artists\, ‘Spirit House’ asks the question\, what does it mean to speak to ghosts\, inhabit haunted spaces\, be reincarnated\, or enter different dimensions? \nInspired by spirit houses\, small devotional structures found throughout Thailand that provide shelter for the supernatural\, this exhibition considers how art can collapse the distance between the past and present\, as well as this world and the next. \n‘Spirit House’ is a significant debut exhibition related to the museum’s Asian American Art Initiative (AAAI)\, launched 2021. \n \nOn Sat.\, Jan. 25\, at 3.30 pm\, artist Namita Paul\, whose artwork\, ‘Testimony’ is on display\, will discuss her work with an intimate group of SACHI friends.  Join us on the 2nd floor\, in the Special Exhibition Gallery\, for a private viewing with Namita.\n\nRSVP:  info@sachi.org;  Reserve early\, Limited space
