DESCRIPTION:With the arrival of warmer weather comes blooming plant life to discover\, an exciting lineup of ceramic classes to experience\, and the unveiling of Local Voices: Memories\, Stories\, and Portraits and Spiral Q: The Parade\, on view April 23. \nGrounds For Sculpture provides a safe outdoor haven that aims to inspire\, thrill\, and rejuvenate all who visit. We can’t wait to see you! \nLocal Voices: Memories\, Stories\, and Portraits is created in partnership with 15 community members and led by artist\, teacher\, and journalist Madhusmita “Madhu” Bora. It is one of two\nconcurrent exhibitions that inaugurate the new Perspectives series at GFS and explore the role of creating person-centered exhibitions\, ensuring individual and communal agency in the art of storytelling. \nBoth Local Voices and the second exhibition\, Spiral Q: The Parade\, will be on view from April 23\, 2023\, through January 7\, 2024\, in Grounds For Sculpture’s Domestic Arts Building. Spiral Q’s focus will be on the locally and nationally recognized puppet-making organization Spiral Q\, with its rich history of take-to-the-street advocacy processions for social and political change.

DESCRIPTION:The world of Indian classical music is a vast sonic treasure trove that can seem daunting even to people acquainted with its riches. Over the past three decades Berkeley tenor saxophonist George Brooks has carved out a singular niche as a discerning curator known for designing creatively charged jazz collaborations with the most influential and renowned artists in the Hindustani and Carnatic traditions. It’s a role he’s embraced in organizing a series of unprecedented East/West encounters for the Stanford Jazz Festival over the past decade. \nThis concert marks the next step in his evolving relationship with vocalist Mahesh Kale\, who made his North American debut with Brooks at the SJF in 2016\, a thrilling encounter between masters who embody the world’s two most sophisticated improvisational traditions. Now living in Mountain View\, Kale catapulted to fame in 2015 when he won the best playback singer award at the 63rd National Film Awards\, India’s equivalent of the Oscars\, for his work in the epic musical Katyar Kaljat Ghusli (A Dagger Through the Heart). A lavish production of a 1967 stage musical that helped revive Natya Sangeet\, the semi-classical Marathi musical theater tradition dating back the 19th Century\, the film scored an unlikely honor for a regional art form far outside Bollywood’s mainstream Hindi-language fare\, helping spark a revival. \nBorn and raised in Pune\, the cultural heartland of the western Indian state of Maharashtra\, Kale became a disciple of Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki\, a hugely influential figure who composed the musical Katyar Kaljat Ghusli. Moving to the South Bay put him right in the orbit of Brooks\, who made his SJF debut with his all-star group Summit featuring tabla legend Zakir Hussain and drum star Steve Smith. DESCRIPTION:Nora Fatehi is a Canadian dancer\, model\, actress and singer who has mainly appeared in Hindi films. She has also starred in Malayalam and Telugu films. She comes from a Moroccan Canadian family\, and was born and raised in Canada\, although in interviews despite being of Moroccan descent she has stated that she considers herself “an Indian at heart”. She is most known for her work in the Indian film industry. She made her film debut in the Bollywood film Roar: Tigers of the Sundarbans. She gained popularity in Telugu cinema by doing item numbers in films like Temper\, Beginning|Baahubali]] and Kick 2 and has also starred in two Malayalam films\, Double Barrel and Kayamkulam Kochunni. \nIn 2015\, she was a contestant on the reality television show Bigg Boss 9 and was evicted on Day 84. In 2016\, she participated in the reality television dance show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. She appeared in the Bollywood film Satyamev Jayate in which she was seen in the recreated version of the song “Dilbar” which crossed 20 million views on YouTube in the first 24 hours of its release\, making it the first Hindi song to have garnered such numbers in India. She also collaborated with the Moroccan hip-hop group Fnaïre [fr] to release an Arabic version of the Dilbar song. Fatehi began her career by appearing in Bollywood film Roar: Tigers of the Sundarbans. After that she was signed for an item number in Puri Jagannath’s Telugu film Temper\, marking her debut in Telugu. She has also done a special appearance with Emraan Hashmi and Gurmeet Chaudhary in the film Mr. X directed by Vikram Bhatt and produced by Mahesh Bhatt. Later Fatehi appeared in item numbers for movies such as Baahubali: The Beginning and Kick 2.
