DESCRIPTION:The San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) continue to honor the cultural diversity of the Bay Area on Thursday\, November 9 when the organization hosts a Celebration of Diwali\, India’s festival of lights that celebrates the triumph of light over darkness\, good over evil\, and the human ability to overcome. The Celebration of Diwali will take place at SAP Center at San Jose (@SAPCenter) when the Sharks host the Edmonton Oilers at 7:30 p.m. \nTickets to the Sharks Celebration of Diwali can be purchased HERE. \nFestivities at the Celebration of Diwali will include festive dance performances pregame on the concourse and during both intermissions on the ice performed by Gurus of Dance\, a Bollywood dance\, drama\, and entertainment company based in Milpitas.  Additionally\, there will be free henna tattoo art for all fans on the concourse and music throughout the night will selected by in-arena DJ\, DJ Heer.

SUMMARY:Decadence and Decay: Fashioning the Image of Lady Mary Curzon\, Vicereine of India
DESCRIPTION:A headless mannequin placed within a glass box wears a legendary ball gown commissioned in 1902 by the Vicereine of India\, Mary Curzon. The dress – commissioned for a state ball in Delhi – was as symbolic as it was magnificent\, featuring peacock feathers embroidered in gold\, silver\, and copper threads. Worn on the statuesque body of the Vicereine\, the gown transformed her into “a vision of embodied light” that revealed the opulence of the British Raj rather than the ways in which it was falling apart at the seams. Its display also attempts to highlight the glamour and glory of Empire though it\, too\, is clearly in a state of dramatic and irreversible deterioration. This presentation examines how imperial authority and the subjugation of the Indian Subcontinent were staged on the body of Lady Curzon through dress and ornament\, veiling the steady decline of British rule as well as Curzon’s own failing health. We consider how dress can simultaneously reveal an individual’s authentic self while also laying bare their deepest insecurities\, and explore the tensions between the natural process of decay and our often unnatural efforts to prevent it.

SUMMARY:Veena Recital by Ramana Balachandhran
DESCRIPTION:Ramana Balachandhran is a Veena player in the Carnatic tradition. Son of Carnatic music practitioners Balachandhran and Sharanya\, his talent for music was noticed when at a young age he could identify ragas and point out nuances. \nRamana’s bani or style is now acknowledged to be unique and his own adaptation. He brings on the veena\, considered a tough instrument\, exceptional phrasal clarity that exposes microtonal and curvy nuances that characterize a deeper interpretation of raga-centric music; he discovers deeper structures of traditional and contemporary ragas as he interprets them spontaneously. Ragas are interpreted in a variety of different moods & structures\, as he explores them in alapana and swaraprasthara. He has also discovered a number of playing techniques that help him stretch the boundaries of clarity and precision; his renditions that involve heightened repose while retaining phrasal richness are looked forward to by keen music lovers.
