In Guru Shradha\, a student’s journey is dedicated to the perfection and mastering of the celebrated Guru’s tradition. \nOur feature family friendly presentation is Balya Leela\, Guru Kelucharan’s vibrant dance ballet about the relatable story of young Krishna and his friends\, presented by Guru Shradha students under the guidance of Founder Director Niharika Mohanty\, a disciple of Guru Kelucharan who will also be performing. This will be a 2 hour recital showcasing the Odissi choreography of the legendary master Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and his son\, Guru Ratikant Mohapatra. \nOdissi dance\, which has its roots in ancient temple sculptures in eastern India\, is characterized by the juxtaposition of fluid torso movements and strong footwork that also give the dance its unique lyrical grace. Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra was no stranger to the Indian classical arts world. He was to Odissi dance what Pandit Ravi Shankar was to the sitar: he was considered a key architect and reconstructor of Odissi dance popularizing the form around the world. Guru Shradha\, a premier Bay Area Odissi institution in the US is Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra’s 2nd establishment in the world.

DESCRIPTION:India is home to a dazzling array of storytelling traditions. From the kalamkari narrative paintings of Andhra Pradesh to the Baul singers of West Bengal\, to the kathputli string puppets of Rajasthan\, every corner of the country is home to rich oral traditions that spark the imagination and provide a container for people to tell and retell their own stories. \nAmongst these storytelling traditions is kathak\, classical dance of North India. The kathakas of ancient India were nomadic bards who traveled from village to village telling stories through dance\, music and expression. These stories drew on mythology\, history and the everyday lived experiences of people. Traditional kathak performances included direct exchange and conversation between the dancer\, musicians\, and spectators. As kathakas engaged their audiences\, they formed a living connection with the history and narratives of a people. \nIn Storytellers and Nomads\, kathak artist Rina Mehta brings this tradition to life with a retelling of Sita’s kidnapping from the great Indian epic\, the Ramayana. Mehta’s rendition of Sita invites audience members to consider why so many people return to her story over and over again\, searching for and finding new meaning.

DESCRIPTION:The South Asian Literature and Art Festival (SALA) aims to contribute to the literary and cultural life of the residents of Silicon Valley. The 2022 event focuses on a theme of “Humanity” by examining how the world tends to put people in boxes\, categorizing and generalizing communities of different color\, class\, gender\, and caste. The forums and conversations will examine and celebrate different points of view\, while also recognizing that ultimately\, it is a shared humanity that triumphs. \nThis expertly-curated event will represent South Asian culture to a broad Bay Area audience\, providing a platform to spark engagement between distinguished authors and the diverse audiences of Silicon Valley\, many of whom may have had little opportunity to experience the talent and voices coming out of South Asia and its diaspora. \nDiscussions will take place in venues around Montalvo’s historic Villa and property\, and visitors can also enjoy book sales and author signings presented by Books\, Inc.\, a marketplace\, children’s craft activities\, dance\, music\, poetry\, and painting.
