SUMMARY:On Healing the Trauma of Caste
DESCRIPTION:Caste is one of the oldest systems of exclusion in the world. It negatively impacts 1.9 billion people worldwide\, crippling their quality of life. With its roots in India\, the caste system ranks people into five castes that are based on spiritual purity and their deeds in past lives. For anyone born into a culture where caste is rampant\, it determines who and where they worship\, choices and advancement in education and career\, even personal relationships-in essence their entire lives. Brahmins\, who created this system in Hindu scripture\, are at the top of the caste system and have benefited from centuries of privilege\, access\, and power because of it. Dalits\, who sit at the bottom of this hierarchy\, are branded “untouchable” and sentenced to a violent system of caste apartheid with separate neighborhoods\, places of worship\, and schools. \nDalit American activist and author Thenmozhi Soundarajan\, has been working to end caste oppression around the world for decades. In her work\, she endeavors to help Dalit individuals and families heal through international solidarity with other oppressed people\, working together to dismantle caste apartheid. Thenmozhi’s work is a call to action to end caste apartheid\, grounded in Dalit feminist abolition and engaged Buddhism. \nJoin Thenmozhi Soundararajan for a powerful conversation on the ongoing trauma of the caste system and Dalit people’s fight against oppression. Sharing from her latest book\, The Trauma of Caste\, in which she examines caste from her feminist\, abolitionist\, and Dalit Buddhist perspective; tying Dalit oppression and the fight against that oppression to the ongoing liberation movements among Black\, Indigenous\, Latinx\, femme\, and Queer communities. \nPresented by CIIS Public Programs (California Institute of Integral Studies).

DESCRIPTION:Oakland Symphony’s “Notes from California” with guest conductor Vinay Parameswaran and soprano Kathryn Mueller. The program will feature three works related to the Golden State. Two are by acclaimed contemporary composers Gabriella Smith (her Tumblebird in its Bay Area premiere) and Reena Esmail (her eloquent History of Red.) Igor Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements is one of the many masterworks from Beverly Hills’ enclave of exiled artists in the 1940s. \nInternationally recognized for his energetic presence\, imaginative programming\, and compelling musicianship\, Vinay Parameswaran is one of the most exciting and versatile conductors on the podium today. In the 22/23 season\, Parameswaran makes his debuts with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra\, Pasadena Symphony\, Louisiana Philharmonic\, Charlotte Symphony\, Oakland Symphony\, Winston-Salem Symphony\, and return appearances with the Nashville Symphony and Rochester Philharmonic. \nParameswaran recently completed five seasons with The Cleveland Orchestra\, first as Assistant Conductor then a promotion to Associate Conductor. In this role\, he led The Cleveland Orchestra in several dozen concerts each season at Severance Music Center\, Blossom Music Festival\, and on tour. He also served as music director of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra. Recent highlights have included debuts with the Pittsburgh Symphony\, Detroit Symphony\, National Symphony Orchestra\, Louisville Orchestra\, North Carolina Symphony\, Toledo Symphony\, Grant Park Orchestra\, Rochester Philharmonic\, Tucson Symphony\, Milwaukee Symphony\, and the Jacksonville Symphony. \nParameswaran came to Cleveland following three seasons as Associate Conductor of the Nashville Symphony. In the summer of 2017\, Parameswaran was a Conducting Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center. \nA native of the San Francisco Bay Area\, Parameswaran holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and political science from Brown University\, where he graduated with honors. At Brown\, he began his conducting studies with Paul Phillips. He received an Artist Diploma in conducting from the Curtis Institute of Music\, where he studied with renowned pedagogue Otto-Werner Mueller as the Albert M. Greenfield Fellow.

Rarely heard in performance in the United States\, this drum forms the rhythmic backbone of Dhrupad\, the oldest known vocal style of Indian classical music. Enjoy a performance by a generational talent while learning about the roots and style of this storied and harmonically rich rhythm instrument. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE PERFORMER \nNishaant Singh\, disciple of Pandit Chanchal Kumar Bhattacharya\, is a celebrated pakhawaj player and the instrument’s torch bearer for his generation. He belongs to a famous traditional folk musical family in Kalimpong\, Darjeeling\, with a lineage of music that goes back four generations. Currently\, Nishaant serves as a guest professor of pakhawaj in the Department of Cultural Affairs\, VidyaMandira College\, in Kolkata\, India. SUMMARY:GODS IN LIVING COLOR: 19TH-CENTURY DEVOTIONAL LITHOGRAPHS FROM CALCUTTA
DESCRIPTION:For over two thousand years\, artists in the Indian Subcontinent have depicted Hindu deities through a wide range of media\, frequently innovating when new techniques and materials became available or in response to social or religious changes. One such moment occurred during the 19th century in the city of Calcutta (now Kolkata)\, when new technologies of reproduction and systems of representation brought by the British Raj—and its allied systems of commerce and culture—opened up new representational possibilities. This lecture will address what happened when lithography and other depictive tools entered a local visual ecosystem already rich with indigenous forms of painted and printed devotional imagery. The new forms of sacred and mythological imagery that Bengali artists created during this moment of transformation were\, until recently\, mostly excluded from the art historical canon. Celebrating and exploring them not only broadens our view of the history of Indian art and religion but also helps us to understand the ever-expanding universe of sacred images that we see in home\, shop and office shrines around the globe today. \n  \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. Reconsider the meaning of an object that we use daily with Sarita Sundar\, author of the new book “From the Frugal to the Ornate: Stories of the Seat in India.” Sundar’s presentation will examine seats that resist typecasting; seats that defy time and space; and seats that inspire a range of emotions — from Gandhi’s humble seat on the floor to the ubiquitous plastic monobloc chair and the legendary Peacock Throne.
