The dancers’ use of imagery and narrative is set to a commissioned original score: the soaring voice of Carnatic singer Roopa Mahadevan and two other classical Indian musicians – percussionist Rohan Krishnamurthy and violinist Arun Ramamurthy – perform an original piece by Prema Ramamurthy. This family-friendly production\, presented by Samudra Dance\nCreations\, features a cast of 5 professional dancers\, 6 professional\nmusicians from both Indian classical and western classical genres. “The\nEarth Speaks 2.0” is an evening-length odyssey\, a multi disciplinary\nwork with dance-music-spoken word poetry; raising awareness on\nclimate change. \nThe work reflects our interconnectedness with nature and our impact on climate. It is a\nstory of a woman\, who is a metaphor for earth. What she says to all that is happening\naround her\, her whelm and us. A show for all ages and all communities. We have used\nthe Rhythm of Bharatanatyam\, the Raaga’s of Carnatic music interwoven with spoken\nword to communicate a very Contemporary Theme on Climate Change; we tell the story\nof a Woman and her journey Past\, Present and even Future. The script draws\ninspiration from mythology\, from stories of the indigenous tribes and even science.

We can’t wait to see you! \nLocal Voices: Memories\, Stories\, and Portraits is created in partnership with 15 community members and led by artist\, teacher\, and journalist Madhusmita “Madhu” Bora. It is one of two\nconcurrent exhibitions that inaugurate the new Perspectives series at GFS and explore the role of creating person-centered exhibitions\, ensuring individual and communal agency in the art of storytelling. \nBoth Local Voices and the second exhibition\, Spiral Q: The Parade\, will be on view from April 23\, 2023\, through January 7\, 2024\, in Grounds For Sculpture’s Domestic Arts Building. Spiral Q’s focus will be on the locally and nationally recognized puppet-making organization Spiral Q\, with its rich history of take-to-the-street advocacy processions for social and political change.

DESCRIPTION:In person at the museum. \nMesmerizing pirouettes and the enchanting sound of hundreds of tiny anklet bells highlight a classical form of visual storytelling in this limited series of pop-up performances.  \n\n\n\nThursday\, April 27\, 6 PM and 7 PM\n\n\n\n\nIn April\, local dancers from the Noorani Dance Company lead the Dance Dialogues experience with demonstrations of Kathak — a classical Indian storytelling form marked by intricate footwork\, mesmerizing rhythms\, and the distinctive music of hundreds of small bells worn around the dancers’ ankles.  \nSee our schedule of all Beyond Bollywood events and performances.  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nThe Noorani Dance Company is comprised of preprofessional and professional dancers\, committed to enlightening minds and hearts through performances and collaborative partnerships across other forms of performing arts. The company’s founder and artistic director Farah Yasmeen Shaikh is an internationally acclaimed Kathak performer\, choreographer\, and instructor. Having received two decades of training from the late Pandit Chitresh Das\, Farah is known for her evocative storytelling and technical precision; her work addresses topics of historical and social relevance while maintaining the classical elements of Kathak. Since 2015\, she has been performing and teaching throughout Pakistan\, becoming a sought-after presence and contributor to the Pakistani cultural arts landscape.  \nABOUT DANCE DIALOGUES \nDance Dialogues pop-ups will be offered in April (Indian)\, May (Balinese)\, June (Jazz)\, and the second Sunday in July (Cambodian). First come\, first served; space is limited. Each pop-up program features performers of Indian\, Balinese\, Cambodian\, or Jazz styles looking at art with visitors and a museum educator (or on Sundays\, an Art Speak intern)\, then moving to a designated area for a brief performance and Q&A.   \n

DESCRIPTION:Guru Indra Rajan who passed away on April 29\, 2022 hailed from a family of hereditary temple dancers and musicians. She had her early gurukula training under Kutraalam Ganesha Pillai and established herself in Chennai as an accomplished Bharatanatyam exponent\, teacher and nattuvangam artist par excellence.  She had been decorated with many honors and awards including Natya Kala Ratnam (1976)\, Natya Kala Bhushan (1976)\, Kalaimamani (1991)\, the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi award (1996) and Acharya Choodamani (2004). Guru Indra Rajan holds a unique place among women nattuvanars\, excelling in rendering complicated jati patterns with a flamboyant and vibrant style of reciting the sollukattus. Many renowned dancers had sought her services to conduct their performances\, performing the nattuvangam. During her illustrious career of over six decades\, she trained over 1000 students in her institution Vadhini Natyalaya\, and had the distinction of being selected as one of the ’eminent gurus’ by the South Zone Cultural Centre of the Government of India. \nMore Information click Here
