SUMMARY:Actors on Acting
DESCRIPTION:In an era where the boundaries between mediums are increasingly fluid\, today’s actors are redefining what it means to build a career across theater\, film\, and television. For performers navigating this evolving landscape\, the craft demands not only emotional depth\, but technical agility—an ability to shift scale\, tone\, and presence from the intimacy of the camera to the expansiveness of the stage. \nIn this edition of Actors on Acting\, Sonal Shah\, Pej Vahdat\, Sunikrish Balakrishnan\, and Priyanka Shetty come together for a candid and insightful conversation about their journeys across mediums—and the artistry required to thrive within each. \nDrawing from rich backgrounds in theater\, independent film\, and television\, the actors explore how foundational stage training informs their on-screen performances\, grounding them in discipline\, presence\, and character development. At the same time\, we reflect on the nuanced adjustments required for film and television. \nThe conversation also delves into the realities of transitioning between mediums: the challenges of being “typecast” within one space\, the opportunities presented by streaming platforms\, and the increasing demand for globally resonant\, culturally specific storytelling. For these artists\, the shift is not just technical—it is deeply personal\, requiring constant reinvention and a commitment to authenticity.

SUMMARY:Kabir: Music of Oneness
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening where timeless poetry meets contemporary sound in a deeply moving musical tribute inspired by the words of Kabir. \nA 15th-century mystic\, poet\, and reformer\, Kabir is one of the most influential voices in Indian spiritual and literary history. Writing in simple yet profound couplets known as dohas\, he spoke directly to the human experience — questioning rigid religious boundaries\, rejecting divisions of caste and creed\, and emphasizing a universal truth rooted in love\, humility\, and inner reflection. Influenced by both Bhakti and Sufi traditions\, Kabir’s poetry transcends time\, culture\, and faith\, with verses that continue to be sung\, studied\, and revered across generations\, including in the Sikh scripture\, the Guru Granth Sahib. \nOn Sunday\, March 29 at 5PM at Zilkha Hall\, The Hobby Center\, the Anirudh Varma Collective brings this legacy to life\, blending modern instrumentation with classical Indian motifs to create innovative arrangements that reflect Kabir’s enduring message of unity and oneness. \nThey are joined by acclaimed vocalist Bhuvanesh Komkali\, whose rich lineage in Indian classical music — as the grandson of the legendary Kumar Gandharva — and deeply expressive vocal style bring emotional depth and authenticity to Kabir’s poetry. Also featuring Kavish Seth\, poet\, singer\, and songwriter\, and creator of the 18-string Noori instrument\, whose work represents a fresh and evolving voice in contemporary Indian music. \nTogether\, these artists present a transcendent performance that honors tradition while embracing creative evolution — a musical experience rooted in reflection\, connection\, and celebration.

SUMMARY:A Thousand Years' Journey - Story of Stolen Gods
DESCRIPTION:Bharata Dance & Allied Arts presents A Thousand Years’ Journey – Story of Stolen Gods at Cowell Theater in San Francisco on March 14\, 2026. Choreographed by Ganesh Vasudeva\, this original Bharatanatyam dance-theater production follows the life of a thousand-year-old bronze Nataraja from Tamil Nadu\, tracing its passage across a millennium through devotion\, displacement\, and rediscovery. \nAt its heart\, A Thousand Years’ Journey is about relationships — between people and the divine\, memory and identity\, and art and belonging. Blending classical Bharatanatyam vocabulary with contemporary storytelling\, the ensemble brings to life a deeply human narrative of devotion\, injustice\, resilience\, and the enduring search for home.

SUMMARY:Free Kathak Dance & Live Music at the Wende Museum
DESCRIPTION:Celebrated kathak artist Rukhmani Mehta\, Founding Artist & Co-Artistic Director of Los Angeles-based kathak dance company Leela Dance Collective\, will perform Sandhi November 13 at The Wende Museum. Mehta will perform this traditional kathak solo with acclaimed musicians Jayanta Banerjee on sitar and Salar Nader on tabla. \nIn this intimate evening of dance and music\, Mehta draws inspiration from the Sanskrit concept of sandhi\, a meeting point where opposing energies intertwine and boundaries blur. The performance invites audiences into the many dualities that exist within Kathak and give the form its vitality: tradition and the present moment; the multiplicity of human expression and divine oneness; and the collective story of a people/culture and the individual voice of one artist. \nSandhi also features sitarist and an eminent musician and composer Jayanta Banerjee and tabla virtuoso Salar Nader\, who has toured widely with numerous musicians and groups including Grammy-winning Third Coast Percussion. \n“Kathak is originally a solo art form\, as are all North Indian music and dance forms\,” shares Rukhmani Mehta. “The traditional kathak solo—usually performed in intimate settings—is a raw\, unproduced performance of dance\, music\, and storytelling highlighting individual expression\, improvisation\, and dialogue and exchange between dancer\, musician\, and audience. Sandhi is my effort to keep the art of kathak alive in its essential form and nature.” \nPerformance Details \nSandhi by Rukhmani Mehta with Jayanta Banerjee and Salar Nader \nThursday\, November 13\, 7:30-9pm \nThe Wende Museum \n10808 Culver Boulevard Culver City\, CA 90230 \nPerformance is Free\, RSVP required \nRSVP: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sandhi-tickets-1579292489349 \nThis performance is made possible in part by the City of Culver City and its Cultural Affairs Commission\, with support from Sony Pictures Entertainment. \n
