Up close\, you’ll feel the power of the drums\, hear every nuance of the singers\, and see the fine details of costume and makeup in rare close-up. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness Kathakali at its highest level. \nKalyana Sougandhikam was written by Kottayath Thamburan based on events in the Mahābhārata during the Pandavas’ vanavasa ( exile in the forest ) at Kamyaka Forest. While staying near the Gandhamadana Mountains\, Draupadi sees a rare Sougandhika flower and asks Bhima to find more. Determined to fulfill her wish\, Bhima sets out through the forest\, using his great strength to push through obstacles until he reaches the Kadali forest. There\, his loud journey disturbs Hanuman\, who is meditating. Realizing it’s his younger brother\, Hanuman decides to teach Bhima a lesson in humility by posing as a weak old monkey blocking the path. Bhima\, unable to move the monkey’s tail\, realizes the truth. Hanuman then reveals his identity\, blesses Bhima\, and guides him to the flower\, after which Bhima resumes his journey.

DESCRIPTION:Curated by visionary percussionist Sameer Gupta\, this gathering of musicians expands the boundaries of Indian classical music into new and exciting territory. Among the featured performers are sarode master Alam Khan\, son of legendary sarode player Ali Akbar Khan\, Carnatic vocalist Roopa Mahadevan and Gupta himself\, an Indian and Western classically trained percussionist and jazz drummer who co-founded the influential collective Brooklyn Raga Massive. Now back in the Bay Area after more than a decade in New York\, Gupta has invited Khan\, Mahadevan and his ensemble Jupiter to each present their own set exploring improvisation within the wide-open framework of Hindustani and Carnatic raga music\, “which has been translated to mean ‘that which colors the mind\,” he says. “Color Your Mind really cuts to the essence of the idea that this is music for anyone and everyone.”

SUMMARY:Ancient Future Guitar and Pipa Duet Concert
DESCRIPTION:The world fusion music group Ancient Future features master musicians from many traditions who work together in different ensemble configurations. This improvisatory collaboration between Ancient Future leader and Indian fusion guitarist Matthew Montfort and Shenshen Zhang showcases the beautiful tone colors of the Chinese pipa and scalloped fretboard guitar in traditional and contemporary arrangements. \nMatthew Montfort is a pioneer of the scalloped fretboard guitar and is recognized as one of the world’s 100 Greatest Acoustic Guitarists by DigitalDreamDoor.com\, a curated “best of” site\, along with such luminaries as Michael Hedges and Merle Travis. He has performed concerts worldwide\, from the Festival Internacional de la Guitarra on the golden coast of Spain to the Festival of India in Mumbai. He has performed live on national radio and TV shows such as the Echoes Living Room Concerts on Public Radio International\, and the Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC. He has worked with many world music legends\, including tabla phenomenon Zakir Hussain and Chinese zither master Zhao Hui. Montfort wrote the book Ancient Traditions – Future Possibilities: Rhythmic Training Through the Traditions of Africa\, Bali\, and India\, which has been used by many musicians to improve their rhythm skills. \nA native of Wenzhou\, China\, Shenshen Zhang began playing the pipa at the age of nine. At thirteen\, she auditioned and was accepted into the prestigious Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing\, where in 1992\, she was awarded a Bachelor’s Degree. In 2005\, Ms. Zhang received Master’s Degree in Musicology from Xiamen University. As an award-​​winning concert soloist\, she performed and toured extensively throughout Asia and the U.S. Since making her home in SF Bay Area in 2006\, Ms. Zhang has combined her lengthy performance career and her vast experience as an educator\, preserving the musical heritage of China while also exploring other world cultures. From 2015–2017\, Ms. Zhang taught in Stanford University as music instructor and conductor. In 2022\, Ms. Zhang joined the Music Department at Santa Clara University as an applied instructor. She also has her own pipa studio in Silicon Valley where she teaches classical Chinese music. Her solo album\, ‘Serenity\,’ released in 2019\, features a collection of traditional pipa masterpieces. Shenshen has been exploring new musical conversations with her ongoing live improvisations and collaborations with the pioneering world music ensemble Ancient Future\, and world music artists group Common Sounds Ensemble. She also was selected to the Bay Area pilot program by American Composers Forum\, and her original composition will be released early Spring in 2024 on the Innova recording label.

DESCRIPTION:Our March concert combines two especially exciting things: performing a piece of music we have not sung before and collaborating with other artists. \nIn past seasons\, Atlanta Master Chorale has performed with a range of guest artists on a variety of instruments\, including a guitar\, a harp\, a cello\, a violin\, percussionists\, a jazz trio\, large and small orchestras\, many vocal soloists\, and\, most recently\, a bluegrass band. Plus\, we have the great pleasure of making music with Jon Easter on piano and organ on a regular basis. But we have never performed the featured work of the March concert\, “This Love Between Us: Prayers for Unity\,” and we have never collaborated with anyone playing two of the instruments used in this work. \nCreated by young composer Reena Esmail\, “This Love Between Us: Prayers for Unity” was written for choir\, chamber orchestra\, sitar\, and tabla. The sitar and tabla are commonly found in traditional Indian musical culture but rarely used in western classical music. Esmail\, an Indian-American\, deftly merges these musical traditions into a mesmerizing piece for our times. \nThe first half of the concert will feature Leonard Bernstein’s great “Chichester Psalms\,” sung in Hebrew. \nWe hope you will join us for this evening of sacred choral music with a global flair.

DESCRIPTION:For the fourth year\, the City of Half Moon Bay is thrilled to present its Summer’s End Music Festival\, our end-of-summer celebration bringing together community\, families\, great music\, fun activities\, delicious food\, and more. This festive street party is happening on Saturday\, September 23 from noon until 7 PM in Downtown Half Moon Bay\, at Mac Dutra Plaza and Main Street/Kelly Avenue (near City Hall at 501 Main Street). Portions of those streets will be closed\, so walking or biking is recommended. \nThe Summer’s End Music Festival’s musical performances and activities are all free\, making sure everyone can join the fun and connect with friends\, families\, and others in our community. In addition to a wonderful selection of local\, Bay Area\, and California bands\, there will be a large Kids’ Activity Area with fun crafts\, a 40-foot inflatable obstacle course\, and kids’ music by coastside favorite Andy Z. The Kids’ Activity Area is hosted by the Half Moon Bay Library and The Boys & Girls Club of the Coastside. The Friends of Half Moon Bay Parks & Recreation will be there all day selling beer and wine.

DESCRIPTION:The world of Indian classical music is a vast sonic treasure trove that can seem daunting even to people acquainted with its riches. Over the past three decades Berkeley tenor saxophonist George Brooks has carved out a singular niche as a discerning curator known for designing creatively charged jazz collaborations with the most influential and renowned artists in the Hindustani and Carnatic traditions. It’s a role he’s embraced in organizing a series of unprecedented East/West encounters for the Stanford Jazz Festival over the past decade. \nThis concert marks the next step in his evolving relationship with vocalist Mahesh Kale\, who made his North American debut with Brooks at the SJF in 2016\, a thrilling encounter between masters who embody the world’s two most sophisticated improvisational traditions. Now living in Mountain View\, Kale catapulted to fame in 2015 when he won the best playback singer award at the 63rd National Film Awards\, India’s equivalent of the Oscars\, for his work in the epic musical Katyar Kaljat Ghusli (A Dagger Through the Heart). A lavish production of a 1967 stage musical that helped revive Natya Sangeet\, the semi-classical Marathi musical theater tradition dating back the 19th Century\, the film scored an unlikely honor for a regional art form far outside Bollywood’s mainstream Hindi-language fare\, helping spark a revival. \nBorn and raised in Pune\, the cultural heartland of the western Indian state of Maharashtra\, Kale became a disciple of Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki\, a hugely influential figure who composed the musical Katyar Kaljat Ghusli. Moving to the South Bay put him right in the orbit of Brooks\, who made his SJF debut with his all-star group Summit featuring tabla legend Zakir Hussain and drum star Steve Smith.
