In 1985, Ushaben and Nayanaben started making Indian snacks at home the way many people used to, back in India more than 8500 miles away. Bharatbhai would sell these snacks to his peers and clients of Indian descent. While Chandrakantbhai would sell it to people as he picked up odd jobs around Los Angles. Within 2 years they decided to open a restaurant with the intent of providing traditional village style Indian food, something that was being missed by the hundreds of Indians migrating to America.
As our client base grew, so did our menu. We started with just snacks, but soon we were making mouth watering sweets as well. Before we opened the doors in 1988 to our original location in Artesia, CA, Chandrakantbhai decided that the traditional Guajarati Thali would not be enough, so Ushaben and Chandrakantbhai decided to go back to India and learn some of the famous street food items from their town. When we finally opened the doors we had a small but wholesome menu.
When we started our business we had only one goal and that was to serve fresh delicious food. Today our pride and joy is that none of our food contains any preservatives. Many of our clients ask how we are able to achieve this. The answer is simple. We never learned how to use them. We stick to the traditional recipes and use only refrigeration or freezing to extend the life of our food. Our clients love the fresh taste of the food that we make.
By 2001 we had out grown the kitchen at our original location; we could not produce enough to keep up with the demand for snacks and the catering. So we decided to buy the Eastman Kodak facility in Pico Rivera. Today we use that as our base to produce all the snacks and sweets as well as do our catering.
In 2009 we took over Standard Sweet and Snacks, just a block away from our original Jay Bharat with the intent to serve new dishes as well as sweets and snacks. These new items would focus on Punjabi and South Indian specialties
By popular demand in 2013 we opened our 3rd restaurant in Newark, Ca (SF Bay Area). While there is an abundance of Indian food in the SF Bay area most of the restaurants focus on South Indian or Punjabi Food. We feel that a wholesome Gujarati restaurant is what is missing in the area. This location will also carry our sweets and snacks.

We specialize in the cuisine of South India, where cooks typically use rich spices and aromatic herbs to transform intricate conjurations of vegetables, lentils, and rice into tasty meals that are as fulfilling as they are filling. Masala Dosa, Idli, Uppuma, and Sambar are the mainstays of a style of cooking with which all India, and now much of the rest of the world, has fallen in love.
Paru’s was first established in Washington, D.C., in 1975, after my family had immigrated from India. They wanted to engage in a business that would harmonise with their beliefs and their life-style, and so my father combined his entrepreneurial skills with my mother’s talents in cooking and plunged boldly into the difficult job of keeping a small restaurant running seven days a week. Following the success of that first venture, we moved to California where our present location opened in March of 1979, and we’ve been here on Sunset Boulevard ever since. As more and more people have become aware of the physical, social, spiritual, and environmental benefits of the vegetarian diet, Paru’s has become somewhat of a landmark both to local vegetarians (as well as non-vegetarians who simply like the food!) and to visitors from abroad.
The strict culinary traditions of our ancestors, which my dear parents and I brought with us from India, assure you that every meal at Paru’s is prepared with loving-kindness as well as technical mastery. Our staff is friendly and considerate and has been part of the Paru’s family for many years, and our kitchen is 100% vegetarian. Most of our offerings are vegan as well, except for many of the drinks and desserts which may contain milk products.
